Oh well, worth a shot! Now my inquiries are

Oldest from apr 2015.
Especially when I pay off my nearly maxed out chase freedom, I may try again.

I think it may have been the maxed out card and not the inquiries!  People have way more inquiries than 2 or 3, sometimes upwards of 20+ still getting approvals

Sorry to hear.  The nearly maxed out card is a red flag to most lenders when applying for new credit.  So give it some time, pay it off and then give it a go again.
