With my scores having been improving and recently approved for a Cap One card, I decided to take a flyer and see if I could get another before the new account posts on my report. I did the online prequal, did not receive an offer, but it showed my score was 668 and I figured it would be good enough for an approval. I was denied due to BK which was discharged 11/15, too many new accounts, and too many recent inquiries. I called in using the backdoor number hoping to get a good recon and get approved. The woman I talked to was happy to go over the app with me and said that my utilization rate looked great, but it looks like I'm going to have to have my accounts seasoned a little longer. I would really like to get one of their cards because they seem to be really good and rewarding generous CL increases. I guess it's back into garden mode now.
Don't get down about it. Discover is truly a hard one to read as far as approvals. I've seen posters with files better than mine get denied. I seen posters with worse than mine get approved. Don't take it personal.
I applied in July and was denied the secured card.....talk about ones self being humbled. I had 1% utilization at the time.
I applied in December with 23% utilization and was approved for the unsecured AND my scores were actually lower (not by a lot, but still). I was not prequalified nor did I receive any mailers.
You will get there too! Just age your current accounts a bit more 😊
Laughing with you not at you on your post. What else can you do right? You just really never know what the hell is going with these apps. I also have seen people with scores in the mid 700's get denied, only to read somebody with low 600's gets approved for 4K. I'll just be patient and work what I do have, knowing that it all pays off in time.Congrats on your approval though after having them give you a sour piece of humble pie. It pays to be persistent.
Sorry this happened, OP. You have 18 cards listed in your signature that are fairly low limits. That's a lot of new accounts and inquiries. It also looks as if you may have one year or less of recent credit history.
It may be time to stop applying for a while in order to have greater success with Discover in the future.
Lets see.. Too many new accounts... low AAoA..... Also the BK was discharged last year...... could try late this year or next year.... You need a little time and some of those tradelines to age along with the HPs/new accounts.... they dont have to fall off (the HP) but id definitely like to see them age a year where they become less of an issue... Also there are quite a few accounts with low CLs... Did you apply for the regular card or the secured card? .... Might want to talk to a credit specialist.. Its not quite a recon in the traditional sense.. Perhaps you can get them to offer you the secured card...... or you could take a gamble and HP and app for their secured product... but even if i were to go secured.. id wait 6 months.....
I wouldn't have made a try for the regular discover. maybe the secured card at this point..
Sorry you didnt get it.. better luck next time with a little time.. and a little bit of score increase...

I'm thinking of closing 3-5 of the lower limit cards, I have a 200, 250, and 500 limit lines that are secured cards. That was all I could get approved for a year ago. They have been open for 12 months, will I be taking a big hit by closing those? My plan is no apps for at least 6 months and grow my NFCU and Cap1.
Don't close them down just yet, they could help with your aging on your credit. What is your overall utilization with the cards you have?
Op can definitely close Primor and Open Sky. They did what they were meant for.......they got op better cards. There is no point hanging onto them.
My utilization rate is 6%, but I may go even lower to see if it boosts the scores faster. I use the cards throughout the month, but pay them off, or real close before the statement closes.
They have next to no affect on aging for 10 years.... utilization is a different issue. but the op has cards that can mitigate that.... and those small cards should be PIF anyways....
if not... pay them off, then close them...
