Discover denial

I'm completely befuddled. I recently applied for a Discover It card, after receiving at least once weekly mailers from them for a couple of months inviting me to app. My FICO was at 775 the day that I apped, and I had just been approved (like, minutes before) for a Citi Visa ($6k) and an AmEx Everyday ($2k). Yes, I was on an app spree. At the point that I decided to apply for the DIscover, I was on an approval high and fully expected to get an approval. I have had a few new accounts in the last 6 months, but overall I have an AAoA of 19 years. I called for recon, and I was denied consideration. The reason I was denied? Lack of credit history. What? Has anyone else had a similar experience? I know that Discover is a weird bank, but it just seems off. Now I've had a HP, the last one I was going to use for the next year, for nothing. What are your thoughts?

Re: Discover denial

Yikes, your stats are way better than mine and they deny you. Welcome to Disco ball World where it seems you toss a dice to see who gets approved.Smiley Sad. It bad enough when someone actually has a secured card and shows usage and history with them for over a year ( previous ,recent posters experience) and still cant get approved, but to use a ridiculous excuse like lack of credit history to someone with aaoa of 19 years is quite befuddling!.

Many will say just give it time try in a couple months etc but before doing so make sure this is a card you can actually use or want. Maybe if you take a step back and see what benefits this card can have that your others dont,  then i say try again . I dont have this card, not for lack of tryingSmiley Happy, so i dont want to come off captain negative, many who do have it are happy, but  if i came across a ccc that doesnt want my business , i just say ok, movin on. I wont waste more than 2 hps anymore for any ccc that doesnt want my business. I would just move on and nurture your Citi and Amex accounts. Live and discover all the other wonderful crediors out there  hahaSmiley Happy best of luck on your credit journeySmiley Happy

Re: Discover denial

Thank you! I admit that I mostly applied because I was going for having the Big 4. It was totally an app rush gone wrong. I'm actually THRILLED with my Citi Costco Visa (with the Costco Executive membership, I get 6% on gas and 4% on Costco purchases, 3% on travel and restaurants, 1% on everything else. Costco is basically my grocery store and gas station, so it's perfect.) AmEx has 0% APR on balance transfers, and both cards are 0% APR for a year, so I'm good. I don't actually need the Discover. It's just irritating to be denied when I had no trouble getting those cards, another Chase Visa and a $23,000 car loan from BoA within a short time period with instant online approval and, in the case of the car loan, just a signature. I would have completely understood if Discover denied me for too many new accounts, but with 20 year old student loan accounts in good standing, I do have a long history of credit with excellent payment history. So who knows what was going on? I may apply in the future, if those invitations to apply move to pre-approvals (and I know that's no guarantee), but they are going to have to really court me. And oh look! As I typed this, I got an email invite from them, saying that my FICO Scorecard is so great, and with a score like that I should apply for a Discover card today! ::eye roll::

Did you have major credit cards before your app spree?

Re: Discover denial

I had a Mastercard, as well as some store cards. So perhaps I just didn't have enough major cards?

Re: Discover denial

What M/C do you have? If you have one M/c and others are store cards that may be why.

Re: Discover denial

All the more reason one would think Discover would want OP , to possibly become his go to card. I love the , " they really have to court me" Smiley Happy Lol!. Thats the spirit! I completely understand wanting part of having the big 4!. I guess its our credit culture that many want to be " complete". It would be cool for sure but at the end of the day so long as one has a card that swipes and helps our credit needs, thats all that matters( to me anywaySmiley Happy ).

Ps. Lol your Disco email. Their marketing sure is eye candy at best, dont cha just love all the different colors mailers etc Smiley Wink

Re: Discover denial

Ardent, is it really 6% back on gas with the Citi Costco Executive Card ??? I have it too, but I thought it was 4% back on gas. If it's 6%, that's absolutely incredible and a hell of alot better than I thought. Thanks !!!

Re: Discover denial

It's 4% with the card, but the Executive membership gives an additional 2% on all Costco purchases on the card. That's a total of 6% for gas, and 4% for other purchases. 😊
