That's a bogus response. When I got my Discover card, I had 5 or 6 on TU in the past 6 months. Can't see why you were denied and your buddy approved.
Funny thing, looking through credit card threads I see things like "Discover is Nuts", "What's the big deal with NFCU", Chase and their 5/24 rule sucks, I give up on Barclay's, Capital One hates me, WF sucks, BoA drives me nuts,..... etc etc etc. (I left out Comenity because they actually do suck big time)
I wouldn't read too much into "generic reasons" posted. I just opened a new checking account with a fairly large bank - did it online and they had a problem with my wife's ID through ChexSystems which is what the CSR told me on the phone - before we got a chance to go into a branch, we got "denial" from the bank for my wife and the cited "non-derogatory public record history (we've lived here 30 years and in the area for 40) and property ownership history - again we've been in this house 30 years and had a second mortgage with this bank for 17 of those 30).
The best part is they gave her a CheckSystems credit score 883 out of 899 possible as a "denied" score. (we got it all straight when we went into a branch). So don't read too much into generic reasons .
That said, reading your sig, seems you have lots of revolving credit and quality accounts - other than the Credit One which I have no idea why you would keep that one open, so if Discover doesn't like you today.....no big deal. I used to have a Discover card in the late 1990's with a $10k limit - I closed it and I don't remember why but it wasn't due to missed payments or anything like that. Starting around 2011-12 I tried to get a Discover - declined, tried again at least 3 or 4 times declined. Then in late 2013 or early 2014 I was approved with a SL of $10k, that card is now $19.5k.
Today AmEx and I still don't like each other and CitiBank won't give me a branded Citi card but will give me any of their Citi-backed cards like Home Depot ($25k limit) and a bunch of others that I opened and subsquently closed - doesn't matter, other than maybe ego, as long as you have revolving cards that fits your spending who cares who the lender is? (other than Credt One and the like
)

I agree 100%
I've wasted 5 apps on them in the last 18 months. They just don't like my profile for some reason. Pretty much every other lender I've applied at has been good with it but not Discover. For some reason it just makes me want it more LOL
