Hey everyone,
I saved FNBO's Ducks Unlimited card last on my list since it's definitely among the hardest to get. I've read previous threads about them and the denials seem to be based off inquiries, new accounts, or AAoA. What are my approval odds? These will be my stats by the time I apply.
Scores: 750 EX, 778 TU, 788 EQ
AAoA: 4.5 years on EQ... 2.5 years on TU/EQ
Inquiries: By then, 0 inquiries in 6 months. 1 inquiry in 12 months. However, 4 inquiries total in past 12-24 months.
New Accounts: 0 new accounts in 12 months. 6 new accounts in past 12-24 months.
Income: $112K per year. I work at 2 jobs.
Utilitization ratio: 0-1%
What are my chances of getting approved? Should I go with Ducks Unlimited or the USAA Cashback Rewards Plus?
With a profile like that FNBO has little choice but to approve. I got mine with a dirtier profile. The thing with FNBO is that they have a limit of about 4-6 HP's for the last 6or12months. This is what generally trips up the application happy people as a simple car loan or mortgage can disqualify them.
As for if the FNBO Ducks Unlimited or the USAA Cashback Rewards Plus is better depends on your life. The Ducks Unlimited is for Gas and Sporting Goods while the Cashback Rewards Plus is Gas and Military Exchanges with Groceries matching a 2% Flat card. In my mind it is more of a question of are you actively serving or are you able to go out in the woods without a drill Sargent leaving a new opening. You need to make the card work for you.
Hi Zerofire,
Thank you for the reply! I appreciate the insight as the Ducks Unlimited has very limited data points.
So, FNBO only looks at the last 12 months? If so, then that would be a relief. I won't be applying for a mortgage or auto loan until at least 2022. By then, I think the next recession will hit and housing prices will be at a bargain.
I do both from your third paragraph. I used to be active duty, but now I am in the reserves (thank God). My active duty job was literally killing me. I am also a firearms instructor on the side, so sporting goods tend to be expensive. Strangely, I was actually a commander of a drill sergeant company a few years ago too.
I am just wary of USAA Cashback Rewards Plus' $3,000 limit per year...
ducks card seems like it's the best, but also take a look at sportsmans guide visa it adds an extra percentage discount on top of the sg member discount. i'm planning to get one or both of those myself eventually. get a dillon press if you wanna really save money.
FNBO definitely checked the last 6 months and might have recently expanded to 12 on Experian. The reason I used Car loans and Mortgage was because those are a great way to rack up lots of HP's fast without a lot of effort. Normally all of them in 45 days are supposed to count as one for scoring but banks can legally go ahead and count them one at a time from the report for a denial. I am assuming that you buy gas either way but do not know if you are on a base to buy stuff. I do think they do not allow strangers in the base just for shopping. Based on your description your already quacking for a Ducks Unlimited card. The examples earlier about the drill Sargent was just a fun way of describing the situations.
That makes sense.
Well, sometimes they allow strangers on base... after your car is searched by security.
Haha, I know you were just giving an example. I was just adding a tidbit as a coincidence in our conversation.
Yes, I do buy a lot of gas and I have a hybrid. It's because I'm working on a major merging and integration project. My company got acquired by a F200 company. My wife drives a lot too since she is a sales manager... I think our gas expenses is now higher than our food expenses at this point.
I thought about a dillion press too. The issue is that I got a young kid who is very curious. So, all that gunpowder and lead may endanger him.

I would say you have a awesome chance at Ducks! .. go for it if you like 5% back on Gas?
unless another card suits you better?
I say you have a very good chance.
Very good chance IMO for it.. Got card with 13 HP's on Experian or there abouts at time about 4 months ago.. Although only 2-3 of those were in the last year. Got a nice 15k limit wasn't instant like most of their approvals aren't. Granted I also have 3 CRA's froozen such as ARS, Innovis, etc.. So might of played role in not instant approval took about 3 days which is about par for FNBO to make a decision. Best of luck if you go for it.. Oh ya my score was around 800ish at time. Your score is well within their acceptable criteria.
