Filled out Pre-Approval tool on Cap 1 Website got 3 offers. Which second credit card should I get ?

Hi everybody. I'm over 4 months out of chapter 7 bankruptcy since it's discharge and have been working hard to build up my credit. I started out pre-file in the low 400's and now things are looking much better. I signed up for navy federal and got a checking and savings account along with an Nrewards secured credit card with a 500.00 limit. So far I have been paying them off every month in full. Now my scores are for the Fico bankcard score 8 I have equifax at 627, Transunion 575, and Experian 623. My bankscore 9 is eq 697, trans 617, ex 660. Is this ok progress for 4 months since discharge? I don't know why my transunion is so low. I need 3 credit cards and an installment loan because I have a goal of getting a VA home loan in a within 2 years so I need to start deciding on my second card without wasting hps on a denial. I forgot to mention that I am an authorized user on my wifes capital one plat card of which she has been paying it off each month only charging 10% or less each month. Today I filled out the capital one pre-approval tool and got offers for the capital one platinum card and then below it says may we also suggest Quick Silver for good credit it has 0 annual fee. Then below it shows the capital one secured card. My bankscore 5,4, and 2 is eq 642,trans 584, and exp 663. The other fico versions are as high or slightly lower by a few points as well. I am just wondering what card should I choose for my second card at this point? Is it too early to apply for a second card now or should I pick one of these now? My goals is to get 3 cards so i can start buidling history for that va home loan I want and they say not to apply for anything a year before applying for a home loan so I was thinking I should get three cards sooner than later, but without applying for them every month or two. My other question is about this Quicksilver offer. Isn't this for good credit? I am worried I will get denied and then all those hp's will be wasted. Which card should I pick and is it too early to apply for my second credit card based on my goals? I think a second card would help make it easier to not go over my 10% utilization each month on one card plus I would have more available credit. Let me know guys. This forum has been awesome so far and I am suprised to see my scores going up so quickly.

Let me know what to do. Thanks!
Chris

Hi @cleansl8tvet,

Unless I'm mistaken, it sounds like you had one offer, the Platinum.  I wouldn't suggest going for the Quicksilver with your current profile, since as you mentioned, it was suggested.  If you were to apply for the Platinum, you should be able to product upgrade to the Quicksilver at a later date, maybe 6 months or so.  I did that a couple years ago after learning about it here, having had the card for a few years already.  Do not take an offer to upgrade to the QS1, if that is offered.

As far as time, how long ago did you open the Navy card?  There is no rush to open all 3 cards at this moment.  Most suggest every 6 months or so.

I opened the navy federal card this January. What about applying for a cli or a second card through navy federal? It's been over 91 days.

Hi @cleansl8tvet , You can ask for a SP CLI, "IF" done over the website or phone APP.

You can also apply for a 2nd NFCU card first, then once approved, ask for a CLI on your 1st card.

I recommend doing it in that order for best results.

Good Luck!

I can't answer about Navy FCU, as I have no experience, but I'm sure there are others that can provide some insight.

If you are going to try nfcu use the prequal tool it's not 100% accurate but it'll keep you from burning an hp for nothing

I filled out the preapproval tool with nfcu after chatting with them online and it came back saying I only qualifed for their nrewards card which i already have. They said I would have to deposit extra money in my savings account for the amount I want to extend my credit limit up to. That sucks. I'm working hard at rebuilding and paying everything off on time and am not getting offered anything from NFCU. I see a lot of people getting multiple cards right away with them, but I can't even get a 2nd card with them after three months with perfect history. I only have Capital One now as an option and even with them now I'm doubting i'll get approved. Kind of depressed about the whole thing now.

I used it and it only prequalified me for the nrewards card I already have. It's been over three months with perfect history never late. Smiley Sad

I did, they said I had to put my own money in to increase the credit limit of my secured nrewards card and i wasn't preapproved for anything else after applying. Sucks
