@Anonymous wrote:Beyond Discover It & Capital One Journey, are their really any cards worth looking at (un-secured). I really don't wanna put down money as a deposit... as it would mean, less money in our emergency fund. And Yes... from what I do understand, they give you your deposit back... it's just the 6 Months/12 Months, that worries me.
Um. I noticed on Citi Bank's website, there is a Citi Thank You Prefered card for Students? Is that even worth considering? And... what about Macy's, or Target, or even Lowes? Are they good with first-timers, with no credit history?
Someone even told me, I should go and get a Sears Credit Card, as that was their first one. Unforuantely, I live quite a few hours away from a Sears store now, after all the recent closings :/
Do you have income? This matters. IDK about Cit TYP though.
Yes... very conseratively, I can claim $34,000 a year. Do you think that's enough to get a starter card?
I litteriliy though, have no scores. I don't have any accounts, or anything listed on my credit report. :-)

More than I make! Lol. That's plenty. It's when it's under $10K that it becomes an issue.
My first secured card was Bank of America Secured with an annual fee for 1 year before it became unsecured. Although the credit limit is my lowest, I was glad they got rid of the annual fee so I didn't have to close it. I did have student loans for one year and a credit score of 650 at that time.
Maybe try the bank you have deposits with? I tried applying for Discover and Capital One unsecured cards before I was approved for my secured card (did not know about this forum then) and was denied both.
I've heard of SDFCU's secured card with no credit check but no personal experience with the credit union (link to another myfico thread about the SDFCU secured card: http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Cards/SDFCU-Secured-card-best-card-out-there-I-think/td-p/197... )
Edit: I'm pretty new to credit myself but if you do not have a credit score, can you directly apply for store cards or unsecured cards? I've heard of people who needed to have a credit product for 6 months to generate a score.

I applied for store cards when I had no credit (I wanted to start), I just got denied. (Thanks, Target!!) It's safer to start secured. My sister got a score in 3 weeks by me adding her as an AU on 3 of my cards...2 months later and she already has "Fair" credit according to CK (I don't actually trust it lol but it's good for finding out when you actually have a score). OP could try to get someone to claim him as an AU.

CK scores are not FICO scores, my DW got a CK score after a couple of months with credit cards, but her true FICO score reported until after 6 months credit history. So, your sister may have a CK score but not have FICO score yet (it depends if the AU cards are more than 6 months and report that to the bureaus).
