People have their reasons. All of the WF branches in my region were previously Wachovia, and many of the same people still work in the branches now. I've actually had great service locally, and that is a very important consideration to me.
While the behavior at the corporate level (and in some places at the branch level) was inexcusable, it's not enough for me and many others to terminate a beneficial relationship with the people at our local branches who have served us well for years.
This being said, I respect that others will have a different opinion... and I would hope they would respect my opinion as well.
Wells Fargo is very conservative and unfortunately, sometimes even a few recent new accounts are too many for them. Recons are also only occasionally succesful. Sometimes you just have to accept defeat with lenders like this. I do not think a recon with the banker in branch will change anything because typically they do not have the power to make credit card decisions -- it's handled by the department you already spoke with. The banker can try and plead your case but unless there is a compelling reason they will not change their mind most of the time.
When they say "we want to see how you handle the new accounts", the fact that they have a 0 balance doesn't matter. With conservative lenders it's all about the fact that you have new accounts and could possibly run up new debts. You are not running up debt, but they don't know that yet. They want to see long established accounts and less credit seeking. Keep in mind most people in the general public do not even open one new card per year, let alone several.
Agree with others who basically said that with so many options out there, I wouldn't waste too much time on Wells products. Their cards offer nothing you cannot find elsewhere. I understand wanting the bonus but it's very tough to get a denial overturned with them.
Wells Frgo has its own underwriting standards. If you do not like it, just leave them alone. No harm to anyone. If some branches had their problems, this does not ruin the entire bank....
We move on.... Good luck to the next one.
