Re: How reliable are pre approvals?????

Capital One prequalified me for the Platinum and Quicksilver One, I got both for $1k. I was a little nervous to app but thought what the hell. Only one pull on each cra for the 2 cards as well so that was a plus. I apped for the 2nd card about 3-4 hours later. Go for it.

Re: How reliable are pre approvals?????

The only pre approvals I trust are chase . Never trust discover pre approvals unless they come with a specific APR .

Anything with a specific APR is for sure . That's If reports are the same or better than they were on pre approval date .

Re: How reliable are pre approvals?????

From what I have read here

Chase is pretty much golden

Cap 1 is for the most part

Citi and Amex I think are more along the lines of 50/50 (maybe)

Discover and BofA are not good.

Also from what I have read, if you try them and it comes back with a specific APR instead of a range then you may be more likely to get approved.

Hope this helps

Re: How reliable are pre approvals?????

Weirdly, my pre-approvals have now vanished from Chase. For about six months to now I've been showing as pre-approved for the Freedom, CSP, and Slate (one of the reasons I pulled the trigger on the Freedom, which was approved). Now it just says "Unable to locate any offers for you at this time".

Hm.

Re: How reliable are pre approvals?????

Based on my experience last week, Chase is 100%.  I was pre-qualified for Freedom, Slate and CSP.  Applied and instant approved for Freedom and CSP.

BOA mailer with firm APR and "minimum offer terms" box - I applied with invitation code and was approved instantly on-line.   However, could not get any pre-qualified offers just going to website.  BOA's website would only give me recommentations and no customized offers.

Looks for the firm APR -- no range.  Also, the BOA mailer had lots of language in tiny print about how the offer was void if there were any changes in my credit report from when they issued offer.

Re: How reliable are pre approvals?????

General rule of thumb:

If it comes back with a hard APR on the offer on the pre-qualification page, there's a very good chance it will ultimately be approved.
If it's a "pre-approval" from the SCT, you're good to go with a soft pull.
If it gives a range of APRs, it's just a recommendation but not a real offer.
