Re: How to get a CLI from Capital One

Good info, thanks for that!

It would seem with the way Capital One handles this, one could essentially show a high balance of approximately 2X what would normally be the case.  What I mean by that is if someone typically spends $3k per cycle on some card and pays in full, that $3k statement balance would typically report and become the high balance on the account.  With Cap one however, one would run their $3k balance up to (say) $6k the next cycle before paying off the $3k previous statement balance, but that $6k balance could then become their high balance.  It would seem for this reason that the "high balance" on a Cap One card could in theory naturally be around twice that of what would be expected from any other lender card, all other things being equal of course.  If that high balance field is then considered by other lenders (probably is by some, not by others) it could appear on the surface that one is putting twice as many dollars through their Cap One card than may actually be the case.

Elevated utilization percentage reported outside of [temporary] impact to your credit score really isn't a concern.  What matters is whether or not you're exhibiting Transactor behavior and paying off right away verses carrying that balance.

Great point.  Especially if FICO scores and credit profile are solid, I've found that (temporary) high utilization isn't to be feared and actually could show healthy usage of your existing limits, as long as it's paid down promptly and you're not doing it across many of your accounts simultaneously.   Yes, it dings credit score for a month or so but it quickly rebounds.  Scores mainly just matter when applying for new credit.  If you're not applying for new credit, it's of little concern.
