Your score will get up there! I have zero patience though so I understand....
Let us know if you get an approval!
Great advice. Check prequal, soft pull if denied and I agree with letting EXP go up a little. I would shoot for a minimum of 680+....YMMV. Good luck!!

If you HAVE a card already with AMEX you can't do that.
If you HAVE a card already then you can apply and it's a SP if denied in lieu of being able to PREQUAL.
Score has very little to do with an approval since they evaluate more than just score when deciding on whether to approve or not. They have internal data scoring that occurs outside of just using a FICO like most lenders. The lenders that base it more on score are smaller lenders and CU's since they can't afford the software and systems needed to do a custom scoring evaluation en masse.
If you do not currently have any installment loans, (Auto, mortgage) etc. you can look up the SSL technique to bring your scores up 30+ points. It's in the Understanding Fico Scoring part of this site. I did this and it raised my scores 30+ points from the 690's to 720-730's. Good Luck with AMEX.
It's basically taking out a secured loan and adding an installment account to your credit report. It really works if you do not currently have an installment loan.
I learned about it on this site. Somewhere near the end of this thread you'll see my data points.
