Increasing the odds of getting AMEX basic Charge Card

Over the last week or so, thanks to the extensive information available in these forums, I went on a carefully planned app spree which was moderately successful-- I obtained 3 new revolving acounts with decent limits ($5,000-$10,000).

Now, perhaps as my last app, I would like to go for the AMEX basic charge card.

My question is as follows: If I am looking to maximize my odds of obtaining the basic AMEX charge card, will I be better off applying now (AMEX will see just 1 open revolving account) or waiting one month until the 3 new accounts report?

Other stats/relevant information:

  • Besides these 3 new approvals, my credit profile shows only 1 other open revolving account (I have a number of closed ones)
  • The new accounts I obtained were all on the strength of my EQ report and had EQ inquiries
  • My EX FICO score is right on the border of reported AMEX approval now
  • When the 3 new accounts report, my EX score is likely to go up slighly as I do have a very old chargeoff which is impacting my utilization

Thanks!!

Re: Increasing the odds of getting AMEX basic Charge Card

Congratulations on the spree.  If you are sure the Green is the right card for you, apply when you are ready.  Your chances won't improve next month when you have three new accounts (I've only ever been denied for too many recently opened accounts by Amex myself).  They might improve in three months when things calm down and some additional age of the new accounts happens.  Six months would definitely help.  Was one of your new cards an Amex revolver by any chance?  A lot of us tend to go the one revolver + one charge when we apply for Amex.

As a side note, underwriting is rumored to be the same for all three charge cards so if you find that the PRG or Platinum suit you better in terms of points earning and benefits then that might be something to consider.

Can I ask why you're in love with the Green card? Because for the $95 AF, they offer other cards with better rewards. Like BCP or EDP.

If anything I'd go for the PRG for the SUBs, and then downgrade it when the AF hits. If you're wanting a Charge card.

Re: Increasing the odds of getting AMEX basic Charge Card

I would be tempted to hold off 3-6 months BUT it would seem like 6 one, half dozen the other as far as now or waiting until after the new accts report. If you app now the UTIL might sink you but if you wait until they report then too many new accts might sink you. It's all a crap shoot. I will tell you that when I applied for my first AMEX I hadn't opened an acct in a year and had about 30% UTIL with FICOs in the 650 range. Have you checked the AMEX pre-qualification page?

Whatever you decide to do try an incognito browser when you look at cards and do it more than once. In the span of 2 minutes I tried about 4 times and saw the follwing SUB (sign up bonus) populate.

Green AMEX

Typical SUB - nuthin

Random SUB - 25k MR for $1k spend in 92 days

Premier Rewards Gold

Typical SUB - 25k MR for $2k spend in 92 days

Random SUB - 50k MR for $2k spend in 92 days

Platinum Card

Typical SUB - 60k MR for $5k spend in 92 days

Random SUB - 75k MR for $5k spend in 92 days

Starting scores: 5/15 - EQ: 546 | TU: 580 | EX: 554
Current scores: 4/23 - EQ: 750 | TU: 750 | EX: 750

Re: Increasing the odds of getting AMEX basic Charge Card

A follow up question on this--- has it been confirmed that the approval criteria are 100% identical for AMEX basic (green) charge card, PRG and Platinum?

It just seems odd to me that the approval criteria would be the same. For example, as it is in my case, if someone is right on the edge of the approval cutoff (based on EX FICO), would it be easier to get the basic charge card vs. let's say Platinum?

Thanks!!

I would do it before all the new accounts start reporting.  I would also only do it now if the SUB was extremely beneficial.  You say your EX score is borderline.  What is it currently?

They are pretty much the same. Charge cards are lower risk for Amex so they hand them out like candy.

The additional rewards and perks you get from the PRG and Plat are compensated for with the higher AF.

I don't know about that...I was approved for a BCE but denied for the Green Card and later the PRG when my scores were even better.

Re: Increasing the odds of getting AMEX basic Charge Card

Hmm that sucks.  There are lots of factors that could've played into that.  I don't know your app history to say for sure what they might have been.  General consensus, though, is that charge cards are just as, if not more, easy to get approved for than revolvers once you reach a certain score and history threshold.

Mr Disco,

What might the score and history threshold be for Amex? I’m hoping to get my foot in the door with them soon.
