Kohls pre-approved & DENIED

Used the kohls prequalify link and was preapproved. Applied online and got the 30 day message. Called to check status and they said declined. Tried to recon and still denied. They cited me saying my scores didnt meet their guidlines.

FICO scores
TU 596
EX 620
EQ 613

They invited me to re apply in 30 days. This is the second time I've been "preapproved" and then denied.

Anyone else have any success with these guys? From what I've been reading on here is that they're usually fairly easy to get with. I shop there a lot and I enjoy their deals. Thats the only reason I've ever applied.

Preapproved doesn't always mean approved and no matter the stigma that they may be fairly easy to get in with, with your scores being where they are, I would not expect high approval rate just yet. Work on your report and let your scores rise before taking another shot imho.

Re: Kohls pre-approved & DENIED

Do you have a open credit cards or other loans? My daughter started her rebuild with a Victora’s Secrete Card she got through a pop-up on the website when she checked out (shopping cart trick). The limit was $200 I think. Her scores were like yours are now. She used the card every month for 4 months and then was able to get a Navy Federal Credit Union Card with a $1300 limit 3 or 4 months later. That was last April and today she had 2 Navy Cards (including a Navy Amex with a 12.5K limit) a real Amex and Discover. I’ve tried to get her to cancel the VS card but she refuses to close her first card. VS auto raised her limit to $700 and she laughs about needing $700 worth of bras. You might just need to get your foot in the door with someone and make sure to use the card and pay it down to less than 8% of total credit limit each month. If you do that you can get a Kohl’s or Cap1 Card in a few months. I’ve read that the VS card is the easiest card to get but if you don’t want that one look up shopping cart trick cards and apply for one that might suit you better. Please don’t get a bunch of these cards because more than one is probably counterproductive.

I couldn't find a prequal link so I just applied. Got approved with lower scores than yours, but I have 3 other Cap1 products. They didn't even do a hard pull, instant approval.

I was approved a week before that for a PlayStation card from them. The Kohls was just a random app while I was shopping for housewares. The HP never appeared on my credit. Maybe because of the hard pull a week before? Dont know.

Re: Kohls pre-approved & DENIED

I noticed in your previous posts that you are a NFCU member. If I were you I’d get a secured Navy Card. They usually graduate in only 5 months. You can get one with a $500 deposit and in 5 months you get the deposit back and they increase the limit to $2000. Once that happens I bet you’ll get Kohl’s too.

Re: Kohls pre-approved & DENIED

I can’t promise anything but my Son’s and my secured cards both were $500 that graduated to $2000 in 5 months. Every post I’ve seen that is as recent as the last year have also reported 5 month graduation. I would assume that you couldn’t have any late payments with Navy or that would set it back. My daughter was lucky enough to get the unsecured verson when she first applied. I’ve been on a mission to get the entire families credit in ship shape. I opened my secured NFCU card in July and it graduated in December to 2K. In October I was approved for the Navy Amex with a $500 limit I’ve since gotten a CLI on it to $1500. Not great but it’s 2 Navy cards and I have a BK7 d/c’d in July 2016. My son got his secured card last September and it Graduated in February. He was approved for the Navy Amex with a $3300 limited about 4 weeks ago. He only makes $15.5K per year. I think Navy is worth the effort and the sacrifice of the temporary loss of $500. The YMMV Disclaimer does apply to this.
