NFCU CLI Denial

Requested a CLI for my cashRewards Plus on 6/6 (185 days since my previous increase), didnt hear back for a few days so sent a secure message and got denied.  CL is currently at $17,100.

I have an old BK7 still reporting (8yrs8mo old), but a little surprised on the denial.  I'm not aware of them being sensitive to low usage and utilization, and IIRC they use TU9 which is one of my stronger scores at 742. My aggregate utilization is at 3.29% and always  PIF.  While I dont have the strongest of profiles, I've seen weaker profiles get higher SLs than my current CL.

Now its time to wait on the letter.

Re: NFCU CLI Denial

At $17,100 already, I wouldn't be surprised if you simply ran into an internal ceiling for the moment (maybe because of the BK still being present).  On paper, a TU9 in the 740s, and low utilization, doesn't exactly scream denial.

Hopefully the letter sheds some light on it.  My condolences on the denial.

Re: NFCU CLI Denial

Following along, as I'm very interested in this. Curious if it may be something tied to the recent updates, current lack of PCs, etc. Appreciate you sharing.

Re: NFCU CLI Denial

I wouldn't be too discouraged. I got lots of CLI denials from them when my credit profile was post-BK. That didn't stop them in the long run as it improved. The denial letters are always a time thing. They're not willing to give it to you right now but that doesn't mean they won't later.

Re: NFCU CLI Denial

Fortunately I don't really need the extra CL.  I've got enough headroom to not worry much about any month to month variations in utilization, but it sure would be nice to get my TCL across all cards to 100k.

Re: NFCU CLI Denial

@JoeRockhead @Vinjints Got my denial letter in the mail today and they threw the whole kitchen sink of reasons at me.

  • Derogatory public record or collection found
  • Lack of recent installment loan information
  • Length of time accouts have been established
  • Too many acounts with balances

It reads more like they just reworded FICO reason codes and is the first time I've had a denial since starting my rebuild that had more than one reason listed.  I don't want to open a SSL at this point so there's no fixing the installment loan reason.  For length of time accounts have been established, this account was opened Feb 2025 and my AAoA and AAoRA are 3yrs2mo.   I find the too many accounts with balances interesting since that hasn't changed since my prior CLI (I report 3/7 AWB typically) They also pulled EQ9 (738) rather than the TU9 I expected. Clearly they have no interest in giving me a CLI soon.  I guess I have had an internal limit till the BK is gone without them saying it. I swear I've seen them give people a specific denial that's related to reaching their internal limit (not the 80k limit), but maybe I'm wrong.

Re: NFCU CLI Denial

I never put much stock into their list of reasons.

I don't know if NF does it, but speaking with one of their underwriters directly may help uncover the real reason.

Re: NFCU CLI Denial

Well that's something. The last two reasons I can see. But the first two seem like they would relate more to opening a line of credit rather than increasing an existing one. But what do I know.

Thanks for the update.
