Recently I received a mailer invitew to apply for a Navy Fed Amex. I have a little history with Navy Fed, so I am trying to decide whether to apply or not, and wanted to get some thoughts\input here.
As for the background, I opened an account with Navy Fed back in October when my credit score was around 620 (rebuilding), with income 180k+ and very low DTI. I was approved, but only for $500. Fast forward 4-5 months later, I had increased my credit score to around 720, got approved for a 9k Chase Sapphire, 10k Discover IT, and CLI to 6k with my AppleFCU card. Having PIF for more than 3 billing cycles on the platinum, I figured it was time to request CLI there as well. At the same time, my wife who had never had a major credit card, and had a sub 580 credit score, with 30k income received a mailer from Navy fed to apply for the Green cash rewards signature VISA. I figured why not try...BAM she was approved with a 15k SL. I go ahead with my CLI request, and lo and behold they only gave me a 1k increase.
I tell that story to help you understand that for whatever reason Navy Fed so far seems to hate me lol. However, having maintained fantastic credit for the last few months, I have been receiving mailers from all the folks who turned me down prior to october (ex: 35k pre-approval loans from upgrade, prosper, etc.; 50k loan from BBVA), and of course in that mix of mailers is the NFCU Amex. Do you think it's finally time they are willing to show me some love? Should I burn the HP in hopes of a high credit line? As far as my purchase strategy goes, I don't really need another card. I use the Chase for dining and travel, Discover for rotating cashback, and apple for 3x gas, 2x groceries. I am justy thinking it would be nice to have an Amex (currentrly do not have one) and possibly add a nice chunk to my overall CL.
I got that same mailer also last week. I don't really need another co-branded AMEX card--or any other card right now period for that matter---but seeing all the $25K approvals people have been getting for a 2nd card lately I AM VERY TEMPTED to app for their Platinum card! From what I've read on here the Navy AMEX is one of the tougher cards to getting a decent SL from. Good luck OP if you decide to go for it.
I got the same mailer. I never want an AmEx. Many places my aunt goes will not accept the card due to high fees.
I feel like it's about as past its prime as the Diner's Club. Stick with Visa and MC. You could have a $25k Visa with Navy and a $3k AmEx with Navy. Which one would you rather have? A 1996 Lexus isn't the same thing as a 2018 Honda.
I applied for this card when it was first announced last Fall - instant approval with a $15k SL which kicked up to $20k in January 2018. Note that I do have the Blue GoRewards card with a $25k limit. I would assume that if they are inviting you to apply you have a good chance of getting approved, but then again it's always a crap shoot when its an offer to apply rather than a preapproval.
My wife and I have a similar relationship with Navy that you do, except they seemed to not care for her and gave me the moon and the stars even though her scores and profile were better than mine when we started our relationship with Navy. However she just recently got the same Amex offer and was approved with a SL of $8600 (gotta love Navy's odd SL's). Anyway she is now convinced Navy doesn't hate her. You may not need the card but it's not a bad thing to have, why not give it a shot. Navy can be odd sometimes in approvals and CL's but overall they are awesome and relationship with them is a good thing to have. Best of Luck.
