NFCU exposure to get approved for non secured card

Hey all!

It's been awhile since Ive been on here.  Always lurking tho Smiley Happy   So I have an account with NFCU with no direct deposit.  Company doesn't offer it... (It's almost 2022 right?)  I do mobile deposit all my checks into this account however.  I want to apply for a Cash Rewards card but, the only thing I seem to get on the preapproval is the secured card.  My wife also banks with them with direct deposit.  Will adding me to her account help with my exposure a relationship with them and improve my chances?  Long shot I know.  Or should I just bring down my UTI and try again?

Data Points:

TU9- 619 I think... that is what it showed when I checked for the apple card yesterday. I assume they use the same scoring model

TU8- 678... huge gap

Cap1 secured $14/$300

Cap1Walmart $0/$500

Credit1 $20/$300

40% agg

Open Mortgage from 04/2021

Honestly, seeing that Navy has been known to give profiles with issues  a decent or even great limit off the bat, i would just cold app a card you want. You may get suprised. It only cost a hp and at least you will know where you stand. Often times people put too much stock in how much they deposit  in checking or savings when in many cases thats not even really important as many, myself included, just maintain the required balance to maintain membership.  Just mhoSmiley Wink

@AverageJoesCredit

honestly I wondered about that. I've read so many posts about exposure, balances, loans with NFCU that I may be overthinking it. Thanks for the reply.
I just may apply today. Lol.
Like you said it's just 1 hp and I am 1/12 & 2/24 on TU.

Yes, they are worth the risk or the juice is definetly worth the squeeze. I started out with a $500 CR and in 4 years have accumulated $51k in credit limits  on a low income. Ive been helping my Dad with his problems and only able to do so thanks to Navy. As time goes by and you use whatever credit they give responsibily, Navy tends to give more than we deserveSmiley Happy

@AverageJoesCredit's advice is solid, but if you have a collection falling off in February, it might be worth the wait. Also, getting aggregrate utilization under 29% would help, if you can manage it.

Agree with this. Also, Navy's prequal is notoriously unreliable and useless, so don't gauge your odds based off of that.

Re: NFCU exposure to get approved for non secured card

Thanks for the advice guys!  So after just checking annualcreditreport, EE is next month not February. I think I can wait a few weeks. By that time I should be under 10% aggregate UTI anyways. I just hate waiting haha.
