@SCOTTYKASH wrote:Hello all, I just got accepted in to Navy Federal today. I started up a checking and savings account. I have about $10k in credit card debt with very high interest rates. I'm in a big credit rehab process and would love to transfer a balance over to one of thier cards. My score is only around 620 at the moment. What are my chances of approval on a CC with Navy? How long should I wait to apply? Thanks for any feedback provided.
My example, I joined NFCU with a small savings and checking and added small money to the checking and used the debit card twice and wrote one small check. I let the accounts age 7 months and then applied for the cash rewards in dec/2020 and was approved for 3700 sl, that card now has a 21700 cl. ymmv
My scores were in the 670's.
2 things to keep in mind,
To maintain the free checking account it is mandatory for you to write one check per year.
Dont pay attention to the prequalification page its highly inacurate.
One extra note they like low DTI and Direct Deposit, my DD is only 250 a month
Mandatory!? I've been with NFCU since 2011 and have not written one check ever on any of my checking accounts.
Perhaps you are grandfathered in and an exception to this rule? I'm only guessing. I can tell you that when I opened my checking acount in may/2020 I was told it was mandatory to write at least one check per year to keep the account open. Now you have me guessing, I plan to call them and ask.
I called them. The csr said they dont have a rule to write one check per year and then she put me on hold to double check, she got back on and told me they never had that rule and she wasnt sure why i was told that when i opened the account.
@SUPERSQUID Now that that's cleared up. At least you don't have to remember to write an unnecessary check to maintain the account. I dislike accounts that require certain tasks 😩.

Stupid me, all this time i was writing a couple of checks per year to stay in their good graces when i didnt have to. I probably still write a couple of checks per year, AARP 12 bucks, and my CPA at tax time.
Ok, major update here.
After the pre-approval, I decided to roll the dice and apply for the Platinum card with the low balance transfer.
APPROVED with a $7100 limit.
I have to say, I wasnt expecting that but am very pleased.
Thanks again for helping the new guy out here.
@SCOTTYKASH Congratulations on the massive approval! Do a post in the approval section. Good deal 👍🏽👊🏽🦾.

ask for a 3x CLI (on the website or in app, not over the phone) in 91 days, and hopefully you'll get some breathing room on your utilization so your score can go up, congrats!!

Thank you and I appreciate the CLI advice.

I thought $8000 was the max cli now, up from $4k previously during the pandemic?

It's both. Max of x3 your current CLI or +$8K, whichever is less. In this case, it would be +$8K. Doesn't hurt to ask for more, though.
