Re: Need Help with American Express Question here...

Thanx Herewegoagain,

Yes Very similar scenario... If You Got it and Mine was even longer time frame, I'm thinking I'd be good... If they gave me a small SL, I guess perhaps that'd be Ok... I would imagine a low SL... What was yours if You don't mind saying... My smallest limit I have and any of my current cards is $3.5k... Chase regular Freedom... Now I may have to ponder getting it with something silly like $1k SL, or below would be just wasting a HP, and silly uselessness... with the Blue cash back card, I think have to spend $2.5k or something to get the $250 cash back... Sooo 1k start would be hmmm....???

Very similar scenario here as well.  Burned them in '98 for ~3k and sat on the blacklist forever.  Finally last year they approved me for a PRG but wouldn't give me a revolver until last month.  From my perspective, I was on what seemed like some sort of 'AMEX probation' after recieving the PRG.  I'm reasonably certain this stemmed from the aged charge off and nothing else as my EX8 was in the mid-high 700s when I applied.  They imposed an unstated spending limit of 3K (which I inferred from playing with the spending power button) and wouldn't let me touch another card.  I ran thousands through the card and PIF before the statement cut.  Then in August of this year (after about 10 months with the PRG) they granted me a full reprive.  I was approved for two revolvers and a personal platinum.  They also raised my POT limit on my PRG from 1k - 35k.

Yes Charp150,

That's a Great Data type point I was looking for... I mean a $1-2k SL is nearly silly and useless, To Just Get back into their Good graces.. I mean I really "Don't need it", (their card) just IMO YES my screw up nearly 30 years ago, was My fault, and "THEIR" Cost of doing business with a basically a child In my case at the time...

So Thank You for that... Smiley Happy

and hmmm... What to do...

Re: Need Help with American Express Question here...

Sort of a Important Update here... I just now called AmeX Normal 1-800 number New Credit Dept, to ask ALOT of questions of my situation. Apparantly Amex have VERY GOOD HARD DRives, and a memory like an Elephant... after 45 minutes talking with the gal and explaining my situation, she called another Section/department of Amex to the Aka Collections Dept. Of Amex, AND they FOUND, And STILL see my account there... I mean it's NOT A collection Agency, But the AKA Amex collection/default Department...  Phone # 800-700-7619 9a 9p Eastern time their open, and she's NOT that dept But she said they said they "STILL SEE" my account in that Dept, nearly 30 years later !!!! And they asked her to ask ME, would I "Like" to pay that off... She couldn't give me a amount, I would have to call that Department and see, and confirm, it's really me etc etc etc... A 3-4k balance from back then 1989-1990, I'm sure it should/would be $30k+ maybe with interest/penalties and etc.... I may call 2nite to look into more info n see... Look back for further developments here... Hmmm Very Interesting for sure.... My Post is true how it works, Play by Play... Stay tuned.... Smiley Happy

Re: Need Help with American Express Question here...

I would apply for the Gold or Green Charge card to get in the door, and if u get approved for one of those, turn around and apply for the Delta Gold 60,000 miles SUB. They use 1 hard pull for 2 approvals.

I got back in with a Green Card in 2015 - 3 years later I have had Platinum and Delta Gold, and still have a PRG, Hilton Aspire, Delta Reserve and my newest SPG Luxury.
Once you prove to them, they grow with you again quick.

That is not surprising but interesting that they're willing to accept a payment. Maybe they won't ask for interest given the fact that it is out of SOL.

Hi All,

I just checked Amex Prequal site, and it says I can apply for these cards listed. I currently have several credit cards, Truck Loan, Mortgage, etc with all my scores hovering 790+. All in PERFECT STANDINGS, & Truly No current or 20+ years of any credit problems, very Low Util, etc... In fact Just Labor day 2018 (Yes Yesterday) I was approved for CSP for 18.7k. But my question is, I had Amex card back in 1989-1990, and I ran up a bill too about 3-5k, and just never paid them.  Yes Burned them, No judgement... Again Nearing 30 years ago !!! I was in my late teens, early 20's, I'm now 49... They have LONGGGGGGG since fell of my reports. But Should I , And can I apply without a Hard pull, & Also will or would they attempt to make me pay that money from 28+ years ago back...??? I would like to get In, Or Potentially back in... Currently Only 2 HP's in last 2+ years on my reports... Or am I Amex blacklisted forever ???  Or with these Pre-quals from Amex's Site Soft Pull, Am I safe to Apply ??? Thoughts Please... It says I am Prequalified for The Blue cash rewards, Hilton Honors Ascend Card, and Premier Rewards Gold Card.

Thank You...

You are successfully Pre-Qualified for the following Card offers, exclusively available on americanexpress.com.

Go ahead and get what you want.

I burned Amex big in early 1990s, never paid back.   I was out of credit scene for decades.   Two yrs ago, cold apped Amex and started back with them.  Now I have 6 cards, way more than 100k SL.

My cards show member since 89, meaning they do have my past history.  But Amex have never declined any of my credit requests and, if I apply now, I expect initial credit 20k+.

I just wonder whatever call you made might have woke them up....

Re: Need Help with American Express Question here...

Peekaboo-Icu,

Yes I think you may be right... Now the next day and thinking back on it, I think so... I will wait a few days and see If I get any correspondence from them. I did reluctantly gave her my SS# to look me up to see if she saw something, and that's what I got... Obviously my home address is in my report even on a soft pull. I think I should have just apped and NOT called them, And Poked the Bear. Usually I practice on all kind of things, to just "Let sleeping Dogs" sleep... This may have backfired on me... Will see, I will give it a week or two, and see If I get any mail from them about it. Yes SOL is looong gone. So I'm thinkin the only way for them to collect, is if they let me back in, and collected somehow via the new card... So hmmm.... I'm confused on what to do at the moment with them... hmmm... Smiley Surprised

Re: Need Help with American Express Question here...

Well, you already woke them up. Sorta. No, they won't be able to "collect" through a new card, if approved. Granted, it is an older debt that you failed to pay.

At this point, you've got nothing to lose. Just apply and see where it leads. None of us would be able to tell you what AmEx will yield in your specific situation. If you feel comfortable then apply. Otherwise, just wait it out.

Keep in mind, once the toothpaste is out of the tube you can't put it back the same way.
