I’m a newbie to the credit card game, but I’ve been learning through the forums. Wondering if anyone can give me some advice.
Background info:
Spend $1K/month, always pay in full.
Live in city (so don’t have a car, I go out to eat frequently). Get groceries from CSA, everything else through Amazon or Costco
Work in international development, so will occasionally need to travel abroad/purchase plane tickets and be reimbursed
Bank with BoA so opened BoA secured card in August 2014, $400 limit. 9 months later they unsecured it and boosted my CL to $1,900. Always paid in full, kept my utilization low. Few weeks ago I did a pc to BoA Travel Rewards. Waiting to receive and thinking about requesting a CL increase. (Would this be a HP or SP?)
Now I want to open another card, but I’ve gathered from this forum that 3 is the optimal number for your FICO Score. Since I have a relatively thin credit file, I want to app for 2 at once since the HPs won’t hurt as much. (Are these correct assumptions?)
I want to apply for Discover It to use for rotating categories at 5%, and travel & everything else on BoA Travel rewards. But I don’t know what the 3rd card should be. I’ve thought about CapOne QS (preapproved) and Citi Double Cash but I don’t want to spread myself thin across rewards cards. I have FTF covered with Travel Rewards. I also want a high total CL, so that I can easily spend $1K a month (or up to $3K for work) without it hurting my utilization. Thinking $10,000 plus.
So: what card should I apply for that will give me a high credit limit, without annual fee that I can put in the SD? Should I wait until I increase my Travel Rewards CL and then apply?
Or, should I change my strategy? Any advice much appreciated!

Of your choices, Capital One is probably going to give you a higher starting limit than Citi and Discover. You won't get anywhere near $10k with Citi and Discover.
I would also suggest looking at Amex's offerings. They love thin, clean files.
Sounds like you need a travel card with no FTF at the top of your list if you travel internationally.
Thanks all for the suggestions!
Hadn't thought about Amex. What about an Amex EveryDay to sock drawer?
BoA Travel Rewards and Discover IT both have no FTF, so I think I'll be covered there! Thought about Chase Freedom instead of Discover IT, to potentially upgrade to CSP when my spending increases. But as of right now, I feel like my spending is too low to really merit the $95 annual fee.
I believe the travel rewards card is only a 1.5 or 1.65% back card.
What are your 3 scores and inquiries?
If your scores are 690+ you should totally be able to grab a bonus in the process. And since you spend 1k a month, that would be a no problem way to hit 3k in 90 days (which is the high end of bonus spend)
How many times a year do you travel internationally? I am thinking it would be super awesome if you could isolate to a specific airline. That way you are earning miles, getting some comps and perks, priority boarding, etc. They are pretty easy to get approved for too. Delta gold, united explorer, etc.
It has been my experience that Amex can be generous with starting limits. You wouldnt have to worry so much about your utilization since you pay in full. Just change the date you pay your bill to before your statement cut date. Plus you could grab 2 amex cards at once, under 1 inquiry. The PRG would be great for earning points for buying your tickets, dining, and gas. And whatever amount is on it wont hurt your utilization. Plus you can get 50k points to jump start your earning. Also no FTF. Also amex lets you see if you can go over your limit on credit cards...any amount over limit is treated like a charge card and has to be paid that statements due date.
Not sure how CSA food works, or how it is coded. Looks like they would take cards and be coded for groceries. How much per week do you spend on groceries?
The possibilities are endless here. Since you get reimbursed for your travel.... you could really throw everything you do around that. If you end up redeeming your points or miles for the ticket, then you can always buy a refundable ticket and make your work reimburse you for that. Its not entirely ethical/unethical but whatever.
I would totally see no issue in you using a HP to get the CLI on your travel rewards. That would be priority number 1. Keep calling in and see if they will change it to a Better Balance Rewards card. That way you will earn a decent amount. Even with your travel rewards you would have to spend 24k a year to even come close to the BBR.
Have you checked any sites for prequalification? Chase is solid, citi is solid, amex is solid, cap1 is solid. Citi seems to send better and better offers in the mail if you check online regularly. APR will go down, more points, etc. Same with amex. I mean if you are rich and busy with fair/good credit, by all means, endure a triple pull, get a huge venture limit with 2% back on travel, and snag a 1.5% earning quicksilver at the same time.
How many times a year do you stay in a hotel? You could be a candidate for the Citi Prestige one day too as it includes 4th night free, $200 travel credit, $100 global entry credit, but a $450 AF.
The premier might be a better choice for your scores? It has more flexible point earning, 3x on all travel and gas (great for public transit too), 2x on dining/entertainment, 1x on everything else. And Citi points are usually worth around 1.25 cents each so that becomes a 3.75/2.5/1.25% card......
Lets get some links here of themanwhocan's awesome charts and see what card works best! Heres a link I found: http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Cards/Themanwhocan-Charts/td-p/3986754
Chase freedom and sapphire might be an awesome combo too. You could very well get approved for both under 1-2 HPs...and you would have a decent bonus!

If you're going to get a card, it should be one you'll actually use.

And another detail that might be significant is if OP spends $1,000 a month or all of his expenses are thousand a month? you can pop usually two-thirds of your bills with a credit card, and that might move up the bracketry for spending rewards or incentives.
Yup! Avoid debit cards, checks, and cash like the BP
Wow. Awesome. Thanks so much for your insights everyone, especially jfriend33.
Currently I travel 1-3 times a year internationally, 3-4 domestically. I tend to stick with United, no hotel preferences (company has recommended hotels that vary by brand, however.)
I spend $1000 total, except for rent & utilities (another $800). Groceries are probably my highest spend, CSA is $25 (from a local farm) and supermarket another $15. Costco once a month at $100. I'm just not a big spender and purposefully trying not to be, but I want my spend to be maximized.
Didn't know that about the BoA Better balance card. Just did a pc to Travel, but havent received it yet. Should I call and ask if I can pc to Better Rewards instead?
I want 3 cards MAX (so I don't get overwhelmed--newbie here!). Rotating categories (like with Chase Freedom/Discover It), then something for Travel, and then...???
So Better Balance, and Chase Freedom/CSP double combo? I've been looking into Amex and for some reason I don't get a get a good feeling from them--seems too complicated.
