I finally got around to my last recon from my August app spree...Nordstrom. They've long been one of my favorite department stores, and as my career has advanced and income has gone up in the last couple of years I'm actually able to shop there more often than in the past!
I applied for a store credit card, in store, and after putting my info in the computer, the salesperson got a message to call for verification. He called, and after about 10 minutes on hold he handed the phone to me. The credit analyst told me I was being denied for too many inquiries. I got alerts the next day that Nordstrom/TD Bank pulled ALL 3 CRAs, which must be a new procedure as previous reports here (prior to TD Bank taking over the Nordstrom portfolio) showed Nordy is usually an EX puller.
Finally got a denial letter in the mail 3 weeks later, but the only reason listed was "unable to verify identity." That was strange, as the Nordstrom clerk checked my ID in store, but I sent an email to the Nordstrom CEO asking if he could forward to the appropriate person or department for reconsideration. He replied within 20 minutes (very impressive!) and I got a call from someone in the credit department at Nordstrom's corporate office a couple of hours later. She was very friendly but sounded concerned that I might have been a victim of identity theft (ha!) - "do you know HOW MANY INQUIRIES you have in the last 90 days? 18! You'd better check your reports and make sure those are all yours." Yes ma'am, they're all mine. ![]()
Unfortunately she was unwilling to overturn the denial, but said I would be likely to be approved in 6 months once the inquiries had aged. She counter-offered the Nordstrom debit card, which I accepted for now as it has the same rewards program as the credit card. I don't know if I want to take a hit to all 3 CRs again and apply in 2017, but I wanted to pass along this data point to you. Nordstrom is still very INQ-sensitive and now pulls all 3 reports, like Capital One. I still love the store but am frustrated with their credit card application.
I'm thinking they pull all 3 if they are trying to consider extending you credit if the normal pull is denying you
