In my opinion just dont cold apply, check their prequalification page which is pretty accurate. It will tell you what cards you qualify for without a hard pull. However if you decide to take an offer its 3 hard pulls on your credit reports, 1 for each ie- eq/tu/ex. If you apply without prequalify you run the risk of denial and will still endure the 3 hp's.
Thanks. I just checked and I'm pre-approved for all the no annual fee cards for Quicksilver, Venture, Savor, and Platinum, but none of the annual fee. Would you say it's not worth the risk for the annual fee cards? I'm OK with that. If not worth the risk, I'll just move on to another card, like the Citi Premier or the AMEX Delta Platinum (because I already have 3 CCs with them and can avoid a hard pull).
The Capital One card that I'm considering is the Venture X when it comes out later today.
Edit: I just checked CardMatch, and I'm preapproved for the Citi Premier, but I just realized that I closed a Citi card (no clue which it was) on Nov 2019. In your opinion, safe to apply or not? I ask because of Citi's 24month rule from when you last close for getting a bonus.
@Anonymous The pre qual tops at cards for excellent credit w/o annual fee, meaning those with annual fee won't show but that doesn't mean you won't qualify.
If you have had a credit card with 3yrs of history and $5k limit minimum, you're then good to go. The prequal should show the cards for excellent credit to be sure., they both have same standards for approval.

Prequalfying by no means guarantees OP will be approved. You can be prequalified and still get denied on an actual app. Likewise, you can try to prequalify, get no results, but then go ahead and apply anyway and STILL be approved.
Also, the Venture X may not even be included as part of the cards one can prequalify for.

Thanks Omar.
Theres a difference between accurate and pretty accurate. To simplify this difference it is alike to good credit and very good credit. each level sets it own criteria.
Telling the OP to app cold to cap 1 could cost a denial plus 3 hp's.
At least you can get a general idea without any risk if you use the prequal page.

Thanks. Yes, I have 3 AMEX all of which are above 5k, 5+ Chase cards, and Discover.

But that's what I'm saying, prequal or no prequal, one will ultimately be approved or not approved based on their profile and how it lines up with a lender's UW criteria. If you run a prequal and get some results, you might apply because you think you have a chance and you could STILL be denied and STILL take 3 HPs.
Omar i think you are correct, you have to take any prequals with a grain of salt. some prequals are more dependable than others but they all arent concrete.
cap 1's prequal is pretty good NFCU's prequal is terrible just as an example.

In case others in this thread haven't mentioned, you're way too good for Capital One. Congrats on that amazing score!
I personally only recommend Cap 1 to ppl who actually need them to rebuild bc 1) they will HP all bureaus when you app and 2) I think that they're difficult to grow the CL. If you're not a CLI chaser, then this wouldn't matter to you.
I don't know about the Venture X, but it seems like a card that you've had on your radar. Maybe there's another card that offers similar benefits? Good luck whatever you decide.
