Particular order?

My credit reports are finally clean except for 1 inquiry over a year old. scores jumped roughly 70 points on all 3 to 768 778 and 783. kinda have an itch for a new card but also might be getting an auto loan. should one or the other be done first or if one is done should the other be done down the road

Re: Particular order?

Some auto lenders might be inquiry sensitive, but so are some credit card lenders!

Do you know who you will get the auto loan through?  Which credit cards you're considering?

Re: Particular order?

not really sure where I'd get the loan. been about 15 years since I've had one. paying cash since. thought I might splurge a little with a large down payment. that loan was with my credit union whom I'm still with. don't know if rates are relatively the same other places. was probably looking at a 2 to 3 year old vehicle. as far as credit cards. maybe cash +(have a us bank checking&savings),chase freedom unlimited(have a freedom). thought about the Amazon visa(don't know if I want to feed the beast) or open to suggestions.

Re: Particular order?

I have a Freedom Unlimited and it's a useless card for me since it's only 1.5% cash back and I get more out of practically everyone else.  Discover non-category spend is 1% but the first year is a 1:1 cashback match so my Discover general spend is 2% for the first year -- no reason to use Freedom Unlimited for 1.5% unless you also have the Chase Sapphire Reserve card which gets you 1.5x that (2.25%).

I just got the US Bank Cash+ and the 5% categories are kinda lame but I'll be able to use them.  The 2% on groceries OR gas is nice if you don't have a grocery card or a gas card that gives more.

Discover 5% is great the first year for category spend because it's doubled for 12 months -- 10% back on those categories.

Amex Blue Cash Preferred is a 6% grocery card on up to $6000 spend, but an annual fee applies so make sure you do more than $2000/year in grocery ($40/week) to offset that annual fee versus a 1% card.

Re: Particular order?

Do not get a CC if you DON'T need it. People get excited because they have high scores and think they NEED to apply. Save that HP and keep your scores from going down...you will feel better when you see 800s and you will be glad you didn't apply for crap you don't need. If you REALLY need a new card to meet your type of spending, let us know where you money goes monthly (xx on gas, xx on groceries, etc). Then, we can see which cards are better for you :-) For the car loan, don't forget to go to your local CU, DO NOT apply at the dealership.
