Post BR AMEX

Hello everyone,

New here and actually found a lot of help on pointers for applying for cards. I never knew about the RECON that can happen with some cards. With that being said. I wonder if anyone has any tips for me...

I applied for a couple of cards. One of them being Chase (Southwest) and the other being an American Express (Hilton Honors) Card. I do know my chance of getting these cards are small because I had to file BR and now looking to see about getting back some cards to help my credit again. I applied for the above cards because of the amount of traveling I do for work. These cards would of helped get me a lot of points as I am spending around $4,000 - $8,000 on my company card and paying off the balance in full as it is required all the time. The card is with AMEX and had a credit limit of only $3,000. So was very hard to make these trips work and use my own money when the card hasn’t worked. So so figured applying for these cards would help my credit huge and earn more points in the mean time. Well been using this company card for a couple years now and just received noticed from AMEX that the limit has been lifted and the card now has no limit. So I am thinking i am in good standing with them.

Back to the story. Chase of course sent a email reply right away saying sorry, but we can’t approve you. Reasons for this... Bankruptcy. I tried calling the RECON and explain why I did the BR and things are much better now. The lady was actually really nice and she went ahead and tried the RECON. Of course than told it did not work again for the same reason... BR.

I than tried for the AMEX card. Of course same thing. Reasons for not being approved. BR... I contacted customer support and spoke to someone. Let them know about the BR and I have an account with AMEX already. So I figured this would help my RECON and he passes the info to a supervisor. I just received a letter in the mail today saying pretty much. Because of BR. We can’t approve you.

Is this final? Do I have no chance at these cards because of BR? Am I applying to soon?

Also want to make a note that I had a CapOne and CreditOne Card in the BR. So I have of course been turned down from them. Which is funny about the CapOne because my wife and I filed BR jointly and she also had a CapOne Card and was approved for the Platinum at $300. Maybe it’s just me?

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks everyone!

I posted this in the wrong thread I believe. Is there an admin to move it? Sorry everyone!

Re: Post BR AMEX

Darkdye23,

Before I declared bankruptcy, I had already closed my my company and personal Amex about 2 years before my BK.

I applied for an Amex a year after my discharge and was declined due to my BK.  Five years later, I was approved for a BCE Amex. Last year I had a preapproval for the Cash Magnet card and in December I got a business Amazon Amex. From the forum, it’s basically established that most that didn’t burn American Express get approved at the five year anniversary.  Since you already have an active Amex, I would email the Amex Executive office to see if they will override the denial.

I would keep on checking Capital One for a preapproval at the one year anniversary.  Also have you tried Navy Federal?  They do believe in large credit lines for their members.

Re: Post BR AMEX

Thank you for the info.

I do not have Navy Federal but I do have an Secured USAA as that’s all they would give me at this time. I had the card opened in December.

My wife had two USAA cards both with $7k limits and added me as a card user. Because of that. Her cards are on my report and guessing this is why they turned me down.

I will look into emailing AMEX

Re: Post BR AMEX

Look into Navy Federal. If you’re eligible for USAA, you’re eligible for Navy Federal and they’re much more generous to rebuilders.

Re: Post BR AMEX

Sorry, but yes those are final denials. Chase doesn't approve now until your BK is off reports. Amex you must be 5 yrs plus 1 mo post BK DC before you can apply.

If you burned Amex, forget it, you won't get back in again until they are paid back. If they aren't paid back in full (Amex doesn't settle, its all or nothing), then you'll be waiting many years before they let you back.

Re: Post BR AMEX

I will look into Navy Federal as well.

@Pizza1 - thanks for the info. I did not have a AMEX card in BK. So hopefully that helps. My corporate card is still active and in use. Now with no credit limit. Does seem to be the way you are saying as they are hard to get even before BK.
