Pre-qualified vs Desired Card???

Hi all!

Just wondering have you ever received a pre-approval or pre-qualified offer in the mail and decided to apply for another card from the same issuer? If so, what were your results?

Every single week, I receive offers from Capital One for their Platinum card. I already have the QS1 and QS but I really want the Savor. Every time I go to the pre-qual site, NOTHING pops up even though they are sending offer every week!!! What gives?!? Do you think I have a chance with the Savor?

All FICO scores are above 690. BK comes off March 2020.

Re: Pre-qualified vs Desired Card???

Their pre-quals are pretty solid. Personally, with 3 hard pulls waiting, I wouldn't chance a potential denial. I would recommend waiting until desired card shows availability.

If you have patience, wait until your BK is removed. It'll give you better scorecard and clean file. Hopefully, you'll get a good starting limit and APR when you are ready to apply.

Did you try the upgrade link?

Normally I was say go ahead and cold app. The scare of the triple pull is vastly overrated. But your BK is so close to falling off I would wait. Because even if you are approved it might be with a lower limit. Cap1 and this 6 month rule for CLI etc. could make it a slow grower.

In September you can get your BK removed from TU. December same for EX.

EQ will not remove it until February so it’s not worth the hassle. Simply just call the credit bureau, tell them you would like to speak to a supervisor about getting an  “early exclusion”. Search on these forums for success stories with early exclusion.

Your scores will be in much better position and will increase your chances of approval and higher limits.

The Platinum is one of their low end cards; the Savor one of their high end cards. A preapproval for the Platinum means nothing towards your chances on the Savor. I would wait.

Re: Pre-qualified vs Desired Card???

From experience if you don't have a pre-approval in hand you're chances are low for an approval.  I have 800+ scores and a clean profile and still got denied for Savor TWICE.  They have some tight requirements in place due to the high bonus they're offering on the card.

Keys to Savor...

pre-approval

good score

low apps/approvals in the past 2 years

I would definately wait

With your BK due to age off 3/2020, starting next month you can call TU and ask to speak to a supervisor about getting your BK removed early (EE Early Elimination).  If granted, you can concentrate on lenders that pull TU.  Then in Jan, you can try Experian.  If it were me, Id be sitting in the garden making my wish list.
