Question about SW companion pass

I have a 50,000 points offer for SW premier card but I  must apply by Sept 30th. My question is I would like to get the companion  pass and I remember reading somewhere where its best to apply for the card at the end of the yr in order to get 2 yrs benefit from the companion pass-is this true? I do know I will  need 2 cards the SW premier and the  SW plus in order to get the 110,000 points for the companion pass.  Anyone with knowledge re: this process  please let me know. TIA

It's better to get it in the beginning of the year since it gives you the benefit for the rest of the year that you get it plus the next year. So if you get it in January 2016 you'll have it for that year plus all of 2017 but of course it all depends if the 50k offer will be available at the beginning of the year.
