After joining Credit Journey, I checked and was pre-approved for Freedom Flex, Freedom Unlimited and Slate, none of which are particularly interesting to me. The only cards they offer that interest me are the Sapphire Reserve (although I would consider the Preferred) and the United Explorer or Quest cards. I am currently 0 in 98 (for cards of my own), and happy to just keep waiting until I get Pre-Approved for one I want but I was curious if there is an advantage to starting with a card that I do not want to build a relationship with Chase, or would I be better served starting a banking relationship with them instead?
I'm thinking, apply for the card you want and can utilize.
Skip the cards you don't need.
Unless you have over a Million to deposit, i'd skip the "banking relationship"

I agree with @M_Smart007 I've been banking with them for years, and they wouldn't give me the sweat off their nose.

I too agree with @M_Smart007 go with the card that best suits you. Unlike @SouthJamaica I have very little relationship with them and they've given me instant approvals every time.

Are you saying I should apply before I am pre-approved, or I should wait until I am pre-approved for a card I want and then apply?

I was not expecting that I would ever get to the point that I would matter, but I have seen people say that going into a branch can make a difference, and I thought that requires a banking relationship. Is that not the case (on either part of that question)? :-)

@ThomasJNewton, I f you have pre-approvals for the other cards,
and are "I am currently 0 in 98"
You should be good to go. I don't think you need to go in branch or have a banking relationship. IMHO
I was originally approved for five Chase cards before I had any banking relationship with them.

Thanks. At this point, I am going to wait at least until they have their Pre-qualify site back up, but good to know.

Got it. Not so impressed by their banking services. :-)

As the others have said, if you're keen to apply and the scores support it, you can cold app. I didn't have a relationship with Chase and cold app'd the CSR in Jan 2022. I had 2 other Amex cards at the time ( 6500 limit and 10,000 limit at time of app). I was instantly approved albeit with the highest APR but that's bc I had a thin file and my oldest revolver was only 2 years old. But I did have a closed student loan as my oldest acct with 18 years on my report as well. I'd say go for it. After being with Chase for 7 months, I got my first green check pre-approval and obtained the CFU although all cards were pre-approved.
