Re: Really irritated at Discover

I am very irritated, I went to the Discover website to check if I was preapproved for a card.  It came back and said to apply for the IT card so I did, and entered all of my information, I waited about 30 seconds and then a screen popped up asking for employer information so I was thinking this might be a good thing, hit the button again and 30 seconds later it comes back and says they cannot approve me and i will hear from them in 7 to 10 days.  I wasted an inquiry I suppose.  First in 3 months. I am in the process of rebuilding from mid 500 scores and currenty have scores from myfico of Equifax 592, Transunion 620, Experian 602.  I currently have 4 cards with a total of $2,000 CL and utilization of 11% and income of $119,000.  I am a bit frustrated. I think I will wait till my scores get to at least 650 across the board before I apply for anyhing else.

@Anonymous,

Waiting for your scores to improve is a good idea.  Pre-approvals are often marketing techniques by companies enticing you to apply.  You have a good income and with your score, I am not surpirsed you got declined.  Too low.

Yeah, unfortunately Discover's preapproval page is crummy like that.

Discover is a funny company on approvals / denials.  Honestly I've found no real rhyme or reason to it - it seems like they like you if you have no credit at all or excellent credit, and it seems like they counter offer the joint or secured card completely randomly.  It seems like with Discover, it's a complete and total crap shoot.

I think you're totally correct on Discover's attitude towards approval/denial. I had only 3 months of credit history when they approved me of a 1500 credit line. Thinking back now, it was absolutely ridiculous (not that I don't want them to approve me). I didn't even have a fico score back then. They're weird, but I have nothing agaist them since they seems to like me very much (got another 1500 boost after six months). So yes, horray for Discover!

Re: Really irritated at Discover

Thanks Joltdude,  I plan on taking your advice and gardening till I hit 660.  I am working on having some collections removed that are beyond their statue of limitations and one that is not legit so perhaps that and a few months of gardening will get me to where I need to be.

DC gamer you have a thin file with new accounts.. Yes your baddies aged off but you start close to scratch as a result.. If you didn't burn discover, wait 6 months, preferably 9 for your store cards to generate a score

OP, I see you're relatively new to the forum. You could have saved the HP had you read up on what you were about to do. There are many threads that talk about the useless Discover Online Preapproval.  My point is this; in the future, as you make decisions to app for whatever, read up on here and seek the advice of others before you make a move. You'll be better informed and can make better decisions based on what you learn. Thats what this Forum does best !  Good luck.

Thanks Creditwiser,  You are 100% correct, in hindsight I should have done some research here before.  I won't make that mistake again that is for sure.  This site has great information.
