Ok, I just applied for the Amex BCE and she was approved with a 2k starting limit.  I would like to add a Visa or Master Card, but may give it some time as I would prefer to stick with Prime lenders.   However, I like the DCU recommendation as that might come in handy for her at a later date to secure a car loan.  I am going to try that in a bit and I will report back.

In 61 days ask for a credit limit increase of 6K. Most likely it will get approved. Congratulations. 6 months after than ask for double (at least). Then she'll have a card above 10K that is hers in only 8 months.

Yeah, someone pointed out that you must be 21 to receive pre-qualify offers.  Anyway, I tried Citi and this is the message I received:

"Thank you for applying for a Citi credit card.  Your application for the Citi Double Cash Card was received on 04/08/16.  We are currently processing your application and will be in touch within 1 week.  We look forward to the opportunity to serve you."

So it looks like a potential denial for the Citi DC.  I will wait it out.  Anyway, I am done apping.  Was able to get her approved for Discover and Amex today, so 2 of 3 ain't bad.  Thanks for the help guys and I will let you know once I receive confirmation from Citi.

That's awesome. If anything, wait about 6 months to add the third card, (3 cards is mentioned to be the best for maximum foco scoring) and by then she will be golden for most lenders if not all. I am happy she got the Amex. Smiley Happy Congrats on Discover as well.

Thank you.  Yes and agree with your outlook.  I think the Citi app my actually go through, but will wait for an email.  Regardless, I am done apping.  I believe Amex/Discover is a great start and even if she is declined for the Citi, then we will just garden her for a year before trying to achieve a MC or Visa..  The great thing is, both of these cards provide generous CL via SP.

Yes, that is what i learnt wihtin the last year since i have been rebuilding. I will always put the cards with HP CLI to the bottom of my list, such as Barclays, Wells Fargo...! She can even ask for cli at the card activation with amex. I asked for 3x and they countered with 2X and i took it.

I called in to activate my card. My approval was over the phone due to a fraud alert. So when i got approved i asked about my limit because it was low due to my rebuilding, but i did not care at the time, was just happy to get an amex. The rep said i could ask for cli (did not say 3x) at the activation. So when i called for the activation i asked the lady, and she kinda paused and said something like i would have to 61 days, and i said no, the CSR during the approval told me i could ask for one, then she doubled my limit. But looking at one of the other comments here, i wish i would have waited for 61 days. Because, one, they would have a little history to see how much i use the card, and i DO use my cards Smiley Happy and granted the 3x cli, and 2, 61 days 3x, then another 6 months 3x, i could have taken a $500 card to $4500K in 8 months, vs now i can only do $1K x 3 at the 6 months mark. In your case, if you want the higher limit, i would ask for it at the activation, the worst that canhappen is they will ask you to wait 61 days. at 61 day, ask for cli, if granted, you are good to go, if not, you will wait 91 days to ask for it agin, so either way you will get a limit increase before 6 months. I would definitely ask for 3x, if not approved, they may approve for 2x. So they will counter you. This way you dont leave any money on the table Smiley Happy

Re: Recommendations: Credit Card for 18 year old?

Just an update, I received an email from Citi stating that my step daughter was approved for the Citi Double Cash.  The starting limit was only 500 dollars, but that's actually perfect.  Our mini-app spree resulted in approvals from American Express (2k), Discover (1k) and now Citi (500) - 3 for 3, yay!

I plan on adding a reoccurring monthly bill to her three new cards and auto-pay them from my own bank account to manage her credit.  She has little interest in all of this, but maybe in a few when she matures it will prove useful.

BTW, I received FICO updates on the hard inquiries from Citi (EQ) and Discover (EQ), but there was no HP from Amex.  I just received confirmation from Amex that the card was mailed today.  So I thought it was a little odd the HP did not show up.

Re: Recommendations: Credit Card for 18 year old?

HPs from Amex generally take ~2 months to report. I was approved on 12/26 for my BCE and my HP only popped up last month. Likewise, I got my PRG in February and the HP has yet to show up. Same with the account- Amex is pretty slow to report to CRAs, expect at least 2 statements before it pops up.

Congrats to you and your step daughter on all the approvals! Amex and Discover have pretty good deals for 18 year old when shopping or eating out. Smiley Happy Those cards are among the best cash back cards (in my opinion).

Thanks for the explanation.  Now that you mention, I do seem to recall Amex BCP taking a few months to report.

Thank you.  Now at 18 she has three new cards with all prime lenders, so its off to the garden to let these accounts mature.  I am most happy about the Citi DC as I wanted to ensure she had a MC or Visa in her arsenal.
