I had a Discover it secured card almost 2 years ago it was a secured card with a $500 limit around my 5th month mark with the card I switched to a new bank (TD Bank) and started making my regular weekly work deposits... TD started placing a 2 week hold on all my checks because I was a new member and I would regularly pay off my statement balance every month with Discover. Only one payment was kicked back due to this issue with my deposits on hold. I had the card for 8 months total and randomly without warning Discover clossed my account and sent me my deposit back and told me because I had one returned payment... I explained to them the issue with my bank and told them the only reason my payment got kicked backed was because of the hold... So no big deal right I never missed a payment dont owe them money and i havent had a missed payment in 2 years with anyone.. I re apply a few months latter and im denied with this message STATUS OF EXISTING / PRIOR DISCOVER CARD ACCOUNT I apply again 1 year 6 months late same message... Did i really burn this bridge with them over this.. not sure what to do my fico is upper 600s accross the board with 35% utilaztion rate no missed payments for 3 years.. Any suggestions for some reason Im upset they have bad blood with me and want to fix this relation ship..
I feel your pain on the "Status of prior account" blah blah blah denial reason.
I had a Discover account with a flawless payment history, no returned payments, never over credit line, etc. I filed CH7 BK and closed my account with a $0.00 balance...again flawless history with them and did NOT include them in my BK.
I've been doing the prequal link for the past 2+ years and each time I get that denial reason.
Evidently we're in that category that a computer underwriting system doesn't like and, for an unknown period of time, will wonder when we'll ever (if at all) get "back in" with Discover.
Sense they closed your account they will hold a grudge for awhile but they will eventually take you back. 1 year 6 months is not alot in the credit world. You will probably have to wait a minimum of 2-3 years sense you did not really burn them. Sometimes it takes up until it falls off your repot.

I burned them for $7k in my BK7 discharged 1 yr and 10mo ago and I get the same denial reason, and I'm not mad at them.
But I am shocked that you didn't burn them and they still won't let you back in. I guess this is a good indicator that I am wasting my time. ![]()
Where I worked we got new credit card approval units. It was my job to show the counter people how to run them. Used my Discover CC. We did a lot of transactions, but the end of the day the result was $0.00. My card was also cancelled. Never late. Lots of use on the card. It took years to finally get approved. Good luck!
A couple of comments...
Regardless of whether or not one considers a returned payment to be no big deal, card issuers consider it to be a HUGE deal and their closing the card, or even all your cards from that issuer is a common outcome. Per their T&C they can close cards at their discretion so you have little leverage or recourse if they do choose to close the card.
Sometimes if you plead your case they will reconsider, but even if they do you will be on their 💩 list for quite a while.
You can ultimately try drafting a mea culpa letter addressed to their CEO but don't expect a positive outcome. Time does heal most wounds and you may end up having to wait a few years before they are willing to let you back in.
For the OP my last comment here is unfortunately too little too late, but these senarios do sometimes happen when someone cuts over to a new bank or CU and immediately starts using it as their primary, as they often won't give you all the keys to the kingdom for a few months until you've established a little bit of street cred. Penfed as an example is historically notoriouis for this.
I have something similar: I applied back in 2017, got a secured card, didn't miss one payment, but I was contemplating filing BK, so they closed my account. I never actually filed BK, and I called them and told them, but it still is giving me this stupid message and it's been almost 3 years. I really want Discover back and I have called and spoke to about 20 different reps with no luck. Very frustrating
Discover seems to be getting quite conservative, and the current financial fiasco that things are in is not helping.
One thing I can tell you is *every* lender hates to get a payment returned. Some will penalize you more than others, but at the least don't expect a CLI for a while... At the most they can balance chase you down to closure.
