What pains me is folks not understanding that this behavior can be seen as RISK by the scoring model ( remember more girls/card more 'possible' issues) in addition to the AAOA and all that gibberish the POINT is a growing profile can STUNT it's growth with this side nonsense chasing 'toy' TLs
The OP ( bless her) and many like her get caught up reaching to early in the game and get stuck with bronze 'medals' concerned about $3200 in TOTAL added CL across a bunch of baby cards where with better management the same 'player' might have been awarded some Silver or Gold hadn't the chips been cashed in so early
SLs of 5k, 10k or more are daily occurrences not that big a deal but when 'they' program folks to play "small" ball sometimes the extra baggage keeps you in the minors longer than one would have been over IMO crap store cards vs history building that leads to Mega TLs that can be used anywhere...
Not upset with the account seekers I don't like the GAME and the way so many get tricked into playing Checkers when the game is Chess
Comenity cards don't have toy limits anyway. My Pottery Barn is up to 6k and my J Crew is up to 5k after 7 months. My Comenity cards all started with 350 and they have helped me on my credit journey in a very short time period. If you pay your bills on time and have low utilization the big credit limits will come. I don't understand the negativity towards department store cards some people have. Is it a way of feeling better about yourself because you dont' have them. I see so much misinformation about them on here.
@Anonymous wrote:people get addicted to the SCT and get so many worthless accounts just because they are offered...New accounts are a new account and hurt you in some way ...do you really want that new account to be a pottery barn ect account? I save my new accounts for the prime cards myself. the only SCT I accepted was Sportsman's Guide visa.
Pottery Barn has 0 percent interest for 12 months so it is a useful card. If you don't take the 0 percent you can get 25 dollar gift card for each 250 dollar spend at Pottery Barn. Sportsman Guide won't get you 10 percent back at Pottery Barn. I don't even know what a Sportsman Guide store is so the card would be totally worthless to me but I buy furniture at Pottery Barn so the card is very useful to me.
I've never tried applying for a Store card, but was curious to test the theory out. Went to the site for William Sonoma and selected a pair of cake pans. And when I entered my billing address, the embeded message came out. I did not accept for now because I wanted to wait for next year and try Chase before going for a Store Visa card.

Thanks for the advise Tara. I am actually going to look into that once I step out of the garden next year or so. I acquired three accounts this year and I should have known better to already apply for one VISA card since they're widely accepted than most of the cards that I currently own. So when I was teting out the SCT and saw William Sonoma was actually a VISA card, it got my interest but tried so hard not to give in until April next year after I become eligible to increase the limit for the AMEX BCE first before I app for any new accounts.
Got SCT for "Williams Sonoma" Store card for store card..I said no! I already accepted a bunch of credit cards included TheSportsManGuide 7months after D/C ![]()
I accepted Roaman's ($750) and Outlook ($4,125). I already shop at both places from time to time, and they don't seem to have hurt my chances for the AAA BofA VS nor the Chase Amazon Prime Visa. I only got my first card a handful of months ago, and my AAoA was 4 mos when I applied for the BofA and the Chase. And I like the extra room for util.
That said, I think there may be something to the appearance of having a bunch of store cards. A couple or three? My sister has Kohls and Target, my son-in-law has Target and...I want to say Cabelas? Neither pays particular attention to this stuff - just normal cards and usage. So a couple of store cards didn't strike me as beyond the pale. I'm going to stay away from the SCT going forward though.
As an update to my previous post -My Williams and Sonoma card is not a store card - it's a VISA. I got a $1,000 credit limit and its a full blown credit card with all their current perks. This was a pretty awesome realization and i am not clear if this is the norm. I don't recall other people saying their WS card was a Visa i thought it was stated as a store card. Well - newsflash, they gave me a visa and it has double the CL that my current Credit One (not a good card if you have options) has (with an Annual Fee). Anyone else getting that suprise?
Not so.......I got 7 of them as a guest & HSN preapproval when buying something over the phone from them.
