Why not just open a debit Redcard or prepaid Redcard? Target gives the world’s crappiest credit limits.
(I have the evidence in my signature.)
I am a strong believer in using credit whenever possible to minimize putting my own money out there, at the mercy of others. About 7 years ago when my credit was totally messed up, I had to use cash and my debit card for everything. My debit card was compromised and I lost around $2500 in cash I badly needed for my monthly bills. Who knows how they got it, but while the dispute was being settled it put me in a very tough spot, so to this day I never link anything like a Target debit card directly to my bank account. Using credit is basically my way of adding an additional layer of security. At least if something needs to be disputed it's someone else's money, in a sense.
Back to your question; Target issues crappy limits, I'm proof with my card opened in 1998 still $200 limit, even after requesting TD Bank review it at their monthly Board of Directors meeting or whatever they call it. They do let people back in after they've been burned. I don't know how long you need to wait.

I agree with you 100%. I mention it because it is an option and not everyone is as cautious as you and I.
The prepaid card, however, is not linked to any account. Moreover, it can be loaded via credit card if one wishes.
I just want to point out some alternatives for those who want Redcard benefits.
