Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

Today is day 61 since opening my ED card. Called in to request a CLI from $1,000 to $3,000 and was instantly DENIED. BUMMER! 😒😒

Was excited about requesting a CLI given the apparent success rate around these parts, but apparently success was not my fate at this time. They said I should receive a letter in 7 - 10 days. Maybe I'll try again later. IDK, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed.

Lots of times when people start out with the 1k, that's a tester limit that lets you prove you're a worthwhile customer. Try again in 91 days and I don't see any problem with getting a bump then.

I started in Oct of 15 with a 1k limit, tried at day 65, no dice. Tried 91 days later, they only gave me a 1k bump. Next attempt, they gave me the full 3X, then again upon the next time. So, 1>2>6>18... It's taken a while, but if you treat them right, they'll treat you right.

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

The day finally came for my SPG.  Since Amex seems to be on Central time, I waited until 1:01 AM Eastern and tried for a 3X from $16,000 to $48,000.  (I already gave myself a "2x CLI" early on by transferring $8k from my sock drawered Blue card to the SPG since my very first purchase was 75% of the starting line.)  I got counter-offered with $20,500 which is about the amount of spend I have run through it in the 3 months or so that I've had it (daily driver).  I did a very large balance transfer last month that's still reporting on two cards on EX, so if they're using the EX 08 score showing on my account this week (I get 3 scores from Amex a month, assuming it's because of the multiple cards since I know most here only get one) it's down to 718 for a few more days, then it should bounce back up to 740ish.  I do have 6 new accounts (the SPG itself, AU on wife's ED that didn't get dated to account opening, BOA Cash Rewards, NFCU Flagship, PenFed PCR, and a student loan refi) reporting since opening the card, and my overall revolving lines increased about $80k since March.

If I were a more patient person, I would have declined it for now and tried again in a month or two to see how a slightly higher score would have helped.  But I'm not patient so I took it, and I'll mark it on the calendar for January 23rd to ask for $61,500, at which point I should have run another $35k or so through the card, I would have no new accounts in 6 months, I would have paid another $10-15k in balances off, and my EX 08 score should realistically be in the 750-765 range as long as I keep my fingers off of those Submit buttons!

Side note, I really wish the SPG (30k+/yr) and Platinum SPG Gold statuses combined made for SPG Platinum status!

So I am disappointed (especially given the $4-8k/mo spend) when I know that my Platinum card will allow purchases at least 3.5x times this limit, but honestly it's hard to be too upset with a $4500 SP CLI a few months after opening the account especially when I can objectively take a look at my current credit profile.  I really wanted to at least see if I could pass one of those proposed "4506-T limits" without being asked for one.  Next time!

How much time lapsed between your first and second bumps? Did my first bump fpr nearly 3x on day 61, and wondering when I can try for another bump!

After a successful CLI with AMEX, you can try again in 181 days per customer account, in the event you have more than one card. If you're declined, then it's 91 days.

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

Email saying to call in for more details...

Called in, Denied due to a BK on file (5 years 4 months old)

So, no 3x cli with a BK showing confirmed as previously thought (in my case anyway).

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

So with my wedding coming up in October I was thinking about applying for this card today so I could get the 3x CLI before the wedding and take advantage of the 12 months 0% apr if we need some last minute stuff. Just wondering what my approval chances would be and if anyone here had the same scores and length of credit as me.

My oldest credit card account is 10 months old. BOA 500 Limit

Got a Discover IT 2800 limit 6 months old

and a Capital one Platinum with a 400 Limit 6 months old. I've been paying all 3 cards off in full every month.

All scores including FICO show 738-742.

I heard AMEX is ok with thin credit files, I just dont want to apply for another card and get a 500CL. Also this would be ptobably the last Card I would apply for, for a couple years. Planning on buying a new car in January, so I'm trying to stay in the 730-750 range to get a good Ford financing offer.

Thanks

Scores notwithstanding, your file seems thin. If I were you (in the credit walk I have been), the best you can hope for is a 1k SL with an AMEX card. Also, the 3X thing at day 61, more people do NOT get it with a low SL than those who do.

Good Luck!

P.S. Congrats on the wedding Smiley Happy

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

This makes me nervous haha!! I might just wait then, because a 1K limit and risking not getting a 3x CL after 61 days would suck.

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

I just thought I should reply here to give my experience. I got my first Amex (Blue Cash Everyday) at exactly 6 months of credit history. Check preapprovals first if you want to be sure (I had one for it). I got the card with no hassle for $2K. This was after a Capital One Journey and Discover It for 6 months (I got them as my first cards). $300 CL on C1, and $1,500 on Discover at the time of application. At time of Amex application it was $750 on C1, and $2,100 on Discover. Smiley Happy

So, thin doesn't seem to be a problem as long as it's 6+ months generally. I'm basing that on not being able to get any preapprovals until I hit that 6 month window, but it is just a broad assumption on my part. I don't take many chances with Amex since I expect it to grow the fastest of my cards.

FICO scores at the time of application were somewhere in the 700s. Most likely 708-711 or so.

I'm waiting until August to get my 3x CLI (Got Amex in June)Smiley Happy
