Hello All,

I have not applied for a CC in years. I always wanted an AADvantage card but have held off as my credit needed to be repaired. I have two CC's now ($5k limit each). I carry no balance at the end of the month and I actually rarely use one of them. My credit is the best it has ever been and its time to choose a card. Its between Southwest Priority or American Airlines AAdvantage.

.

.

Which airline do I fly mostly? American! No brainer then! However, I'd like to start flying Southwest as well so in a perfect world I would like both cards but I dare say applying simultaenously would not be a good idea regardless of my score/s yes? Any idea on length of time between applying for multiple CC's? I'm in no real hurry but would like both eventually.

Greetings from another AA'er.   Smiley Happy

Too bad I didn't see your post before you applied. I would have suggested the Barclays Aviator Red (with an eventual upgrade to Silver), as your first AA card.  At that point you're earning 3x miles per $ on AA flights. Thats a good chunk of miles to leave on the table, especially if you fly in premium cabins or very frequently.

Ultimately, the best card would really depend on how(first class, coach), and how much you fly (weekly, monthly, quarterly, international, domestic)? If you're not a road warrior, I wouldn't bother with the Southwest card yet. You can always get it sometime later.  Splitting your loyalty slows your mileage progress if you dont fly enough. As an alternative, you can pay for the WN tickets with the AA card and earn the WN points via your RR number.

Again, your card choices really depend on your travel patterns.

I'm not sure what you mean by "gain status quicker". The Citi AAdvantage Platinum has no EQM or EQD bonus that can be applied towards elite status. Only the Citi AAdvantage Executive and the Barclays Aviator Silver offer EQD and EQM bonuses. Did you mean boarding priority?

I want both!! LOL

I actually did look at that card but didn't see 3x miles, didn't look up the SIlver so assume thats what you mean by the 3x miles. Did you see the new benefits of the Platinum Select?

https://secure.fly.aa.com/citi/ecm/citi-aadvantage-platinum

2x miles for every $1 at restaurants

2x miles for every $1 at gas stations

$100 AA Flight Discount

That's good enough for me! I am calling them tomorrow and asking to speak to a UW. This has gone on long enough!

Yes, the Silver card. Oddly you won't find it anywhere on Barclays website. It's only listed on AA's site.

Yes, I have the AA Platinum listed as one of my goals below in my signature. I'll be applying for it after I get the Barclays card. However, I'm in the garden for the next year and a half. Smiley Surprised

Re: Time to choose an Airline CC

Ok, here is the latest:

Called in, asked to speak to a UW. Was put on hold, guy came back on saying they mailed me a "security code" and that nothing can be done until I get that in the mail. *sigh*

I must be some special case or something over here considering when I was younger (and stupid mind you) they handed out CC's like candy. Now that I am educated, financially responsible they are basically saying "Whoa, hold on a second..you migght not be ideal for our CC. You look a little too responsible over there". **bleep**? smh!

How normal is this "security code" mailer they mentioned?

Re: Time to choose an Airline CC

Just got the mailer

"We are unable to process your request at this time because we could not verify the accuracy of the credit information on your application. In order for us to continue to processing your application, please call us....."

So I am calling them now.....this is like a mini adventure!

Re: Time to choose an Airline CC

Ok, here is the deal and this goes for everyone right now it seems

This mailer is simply another security step that must be completed by applicants at the request of Citi. I spoke to a lady, gave her the security code from the mailer and she immeidately mentioned this is a mere security step and that "Congratulations, you are approved". I then asked what my limit was and "Again, congratulations you have been approved for $24,500"...niiiiice! I wouldn't have minded a $10k limit but sheesh ok sounds good to me!

Once I get the card I am calling into customer service to ensure any new features are applicable, seems the one I mentioned above is the new features of the "World Elite" while I secured the "World" CC. How hard is it to "upgrade"? I can call customer service and ask but i'm sure many of you here have done something like that yes?

Re: Time to choose an Airline CC

Glad you finally got a resolution to this whole thing, congrats on the approval and very nice SL.
If you got the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select it is already the world elite, unless you got the business version or the mileup card.
As for upgrading, if it turns out you actually wanted the Executive card, I think you will have to wait 12 months before been able to do that.

That's awesome then because I saw on the AA site they show them as two different cards

So I was worried I didn't get the one with the new benefits. I'm stoked then!
