Venture X Pre-Approval Denials

Howdy all,

I've been wanting the Capital One Venture X as a catch-all Visa card for a while now but my credit report isn't ideal for Capital One, as I have 8 open lines of credit (used to be 11 but I closed some cards I no longer use in hopes of a better chance of pre-approval for this card). I keep trying the pre-approval tool specifically for the Venture X but I keep getting the following denial reason:

Based on your credit report from one or more of the agencies on the back of this letter, there are too
many active credit cards based on your income and loan history

The pre-approval tool pulled my TransUnion FICO score of 783, I have 100% on-time payments, and I'm 2/24. My Equifax and TransUnion show 1 hard inquiry from May of earlier this year and my Experian shows 1 hard inquiry from October 2025. My most recently opened account was in May 2026 (AMEX Delta Gold), and prior to that was the Citi AAdvantage Platinum in October 2025. I saw on Reddit where someone tried increasing their utilization to about 20% and then applying and they got approved, which I'm aiming to do for next month. My income is ~$80k and my total CL is ~$45k (although I'm an AU on a credit card that has a $44k CL; not sure if this has any effect). My AAoA is ~7ish years, per Credit Karma (both Equifax and TransUnion sources).

Does anyone think I should try to do anything else to secure a pre-approval?

Re: Venture X Pre-Approval Denials

I've never seen that reason for denial.

If increasing your utilization gets an approval we'd all be interested. Please keep us informed.

Re: Venture X Pre-Approval Denials

They're already telling you the issue is too many active credit cards relative to your income and loan history, not that your utilization is too low so I don't know that deliberately increasing utilization is going to change the outcome.
