Venture X | Venture Pre-Approval Denial

I have preapplied in various ocassions for the Venture cards trying to snag the $250 travel credit and the 75K points, I have had mixed outcomes but ultimately never the one I want.

On 12/22/25 I preapplied and was given the option for the VentureOne for Good Credit w/ no SUB.

On 01/17 I preapplied and I was denied w/ the following reason (TU FICO quoted on letter: 699)

  • "Based on your credit report from one or more of the agencies on the back of this letter, number of bank cards tradelines opened in the last 24 months for given income"

On 01/31 I preapplied and was given the option for "good credit" versions w/o SUB (no changes to my profile). Immediately after I opened a new browser and preapplied again, this time over-stating my income as $500K. I was pre-approved for the Venture X w/ SUB. I declined as I wouldn't be able to justify the stated income.

On 02/15 I thought I was preapplying but submitted a full application for the Venture card. EX and EQ pulled.  I was denied w/ the following reason (EX FICO quoted on letter: 715)

  • "Based on your credit report from one or more of the agencies on the back of this letter, there are too many recently opened credit cards"

On 02/22 I received the following two reasons: (EX FICO quoted on letter: 715)

  •  "Based on your credit report from one or more of the agencies on the back of this letter, number of bank cards tradelines opened in the last 24 months for given income"
  • "Based on your credit report from one or more of the agencies on the back of this letter, there have been too many recent inquiries"

My stats on 12/22/25 were:

Experian: Accounts: 1/6, 4/12, 10/24, Inquiries: 1/3, 1/6, 6/12, FICO 8: 730

Equifax: Accounts: 1/6, 4/12, 10/24, Inquiries: 2/3, 5/6, 9/12. FICO 8: 712

My stats on 02/15 were:

Experian: Accounts: 0/6, 3/12, 10/24, Inquiries: 1/3, 1/6, 6/12, FICO 8: 750

Equifax: Accounts: 0/6, 3/12, 10/24, Inquiries: 2/3, 2/6, 8/12. FICO 8: 732

My stats on 02/22 were:

Experian: Inquiries -  3/3, 3/6, 7/12

Equifax: Inquiries - 3/3, 2/6, 8/12

Since inquiries was quoted as a reason when my inquiries hit  3 inquiries in the past 3 months I think it prompts the algorithm to put you in the rejection pile. If we look closely, I have a higher number of inquiries on my first app than on subsequent ones. Only when I had 3/3 inquiries were quoted as a reason. Could this mean CapOne lookback period for inquiries is only 3 months? Also noticing the verbiage of "too many cards for given income" is probably the reason why the dummy app with $500K went through so it seems there is no hard limit to recent accounts, as long as your income is high enough. I will continue to pre-qual every ~14 days to see how it evolves and find out what is the sweet spot for Capital One to finally say yes at my income.

Re: Venture X | Venture Pre-Approval Denial

Interesting data.

Btw, which preapproval link are you using? I seem to recall that venture x is only available from its own link,

Re: Venture X | Venture Pre-Approval Denial

Many financial institutions will use a soft-pull for a whole month - some for more than that. I don't know about Cap1 but it's generally best to wait at least a month between pre-approval attempts to increase the likelihood that they'll be using a fresh pull instead of just reusing the one that already lead to an undesirable result.

Re: Venture X | Venture Pre-Approval Denial

Based on the AA letters they were fresh pulls every time.
