I called Wells Fargo yesterday to try and product change my rewards card to a propel. When I spoke with the representative on the phone, she said she would try to get me to the department that does that. She came back a minute later and said that the department is actually closed due to covid19. They've taken those workers and have them taking regular callers because of the high call volume.
I'm wondering if I should just apply for the propel outright? After looking through the forum, it seems like they treat a product change like a new account anyway. I was just trying to save a hard pull.
Unless you are at maximum exposure for Wells Fargo or your score has deteriorated, with Wells Fargo especially makes sense for a new application as oppossed to a product change.
In addition to factors you listed you would get the sign up bonus with a fresh application.
My scores are in the 800s.
I just recently applied and was approved. I was actually surprised.
Regardless of tightening so far, I think situation is much worse than creditors yet realize.
I would lend to no one right now with the expectation that I would be paid back.

I would just apply for a new credit card. WF really does not do product changes.
They will close your old account and open a new one. It is best to apply if there is a card you want.
ETA: Also if you do not apply for the new card, you would forfeit your sign up bonus.
You would get a hp snyway so app for the Propel on its own. Pc and WF are oxymorons![]()

Hi there,
As others have stated, when you PC a WF card, they will essentially close your current card and issue the PC as a new card. I PC'd my Propel to the Rewards Visa Signature card about six months ago and inexplicably went from their highest APR on the Propel to the lowest Wells offers (currently 12.49v) so that was an unexpected bonus. I use it as my daily driver as Wells offers bonus points often for certain spending.
I liked the Propel but found AMEX was not accepted everywhere, hence my desire to PC it. I would app directly for the Propel to see if you can get the SUB. Let us know what you decide 🙂
Thank you everyone. I'm going to app for the propel directly. I'll do it in a couple of weeks so that I can make sure all 3 bureaus are reporting my latest utilization/score.
Update: I applied for the Propel and was approved 😀
