I am currently a college student (less than $10k income) with a Discover card ($1000) and as of this month a Sallie Mae Card ($2100) but have been interested in getting an AMEX card (my first one) for backdating purposes.
I was going to apply to the BCE which I received a mail offer for $250 back after $1000, but I forgot about it until it had already expired last week. I have an Everyday mail offer for 25k points after $2000, but I was hesitant to get a points card since I would definitely be unable to meet the 30 swipes per month and I don't travel right now or in the near future.
Is it worth just applying to the Everyday despite this just for the 2014 backdating later or should I just wait for another mail offer for a BCE? Honestly between the Sallie Mae and Discover, the BCE isn't that enticing either, so maybe I should do something else entirely. Any advice on what I should do is appreciated.
It won't matter now. The card won't be active until 2015 and your MSD date will be 2015, not 2014, so you might as well wait
None of the Amex cards I have in my sig I had any prequalified offers for.
With that said, I think you should have at least one Amex card not just for backdating and stuff like that but for the potential to get a high credit limit so it will be easier to get higher limit cards later on. Unfortunately, I heard a lot of people applying now for Amex have been getting 2015 MSDs so if you wanted to have a 2014 MSD, then I'm afraid you're too late there.

Exactly. you already missed the 2014 msd. i guess it stopped on the 21st of this month.

You'll start with a 2015 MSD but you can chat with Amex and they'll fix it for you . They did it for me .
That's great to know. I didn't know that so I take back what I said earlier.
Yeah I will have to try that too.... approved on 12/26 and online account shows MSD 2015.
I wouldn't get a card if it's not 'enticing to you'. I also have several cards, maybe all, that I wasn't prequialified for. Find what best fits your CS and fits your needs..IMO.

Tell us how it goes. I'd ask the chat first.
