app mistake/not sure where to go from here

Hi all,

I don't know what came over me--some sort of delusional/self-sabotaging fog--but in doing some pre-qual apps for ccs (I was trying to do all soft pulls), I ended up putting in a real application at BofA and getting an hp. And then the app was denied! Customized Cash.

The backstory is I just paid off the last of some old COs. I feel pretty good about it. I am eager to get 2 "grown-up" credit cards and garden for a few years in order to get ready for a mortgage in 2025/26.

Since I was denied and they gave me the list of reasons why they did that, it looks like at least some of the paid COs are not reporting as paid.

Yes, I should have pulled my reports first and made sure the COs were accurate before messing around with anything. Yes, I should have paid more attention to the BofA app. After doing the soft pull pre-qual, I thought that I was approved for Customized Cash. (Nope)

In other words, I just wasted an hp on BofA. I don't know what to do, other than complain about my stupidity here. Thank you for listening.

My experience with BofA is similar to yours; after my Chapter 13 discharge (I made sure it all of my credit reports were up to date and showing said discharge), I applied to my (then) bank, yup, you guessed it, BofA; they denied me because "I was either in a bankruptcy or about to file one".  I appealed, even sending them my discharge order, and they denied me again, and like you, I got a Hard Pull for my efforts; needless to say, BofA is no longer my bank.

Chapter 13:

  • Burned: AMEX, Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo, and South County Bank (now Bank of Southern California)
  • Filed: 26-Feb-2015
  • MoC: 01-Mar-2015
  • 1st Payment (posted): 23-Mar-2015
  • Last Payment (posted): 07-Feb-2020
  • Discharged: 04-Mar-2020
  • Closed: 23-Jun-2020

I categorically refuse to do AZEO!

Sorry about the denial. Yeah, BofA's prequal tool is just pure marketing 98% of the time. The card that they "recommend" is mostly determined based on which box you check on which feature is important to you after entering your information. The rule of thumb I've seen is that if you look at an offer on a prequalification, take a look at the disclosures where they list the fees & interest rate for the card. If there is a single, solid APR listed then the vast majority of the time it is a solid prequalification. If it lists only a range of APRs, then there is a very high chance that what you're looking at is purely marketing.

Sorry for your denial. But I wouldn't beat myself up over it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
