Applied for Venture -I couldn't resist the new bonus and new transfer partner programs and applied for Venture even though I put myself in the garden.
-put a 90 day fraud alert on my credit profile earlier in the year. alert fell off Transunion, a tad later than expected but still quick compared to Equifax(still apparently on) and Experian actually changed the language to a 12 month alert period(weird, right?)
-have been a Cap1 customer off and on for 18 years. always had credit builder cards with limits between $300-$1200. had good payment history with them in particular but had shaky credit during college, after college and then again around 2013. Had missed payments with them in 2013 and 2014.
-finally started growing with them in 2014.
-they did pull all 3 CRAs
-applied online through TPG link on 11/29
-website gave me message they received and would review(forgot time frame, thought I took screenshot but apparently didn't but I believe it said 7-10 business days with info sent in the mail)
- A few business days after I submitted the app I received an email telling me "We need to finish up your Capital One Credit Card Application". I received an application ID and was asked to provide documentation that would verify my SSN and mailing address.
their website had a list of acceptable documents for each type of requested info. It actually had a list of all the types of things they might ask someone to verify and the respective documents required.
-the website allowed me to attach files and upload. the upload was pretty quick and I received a reference # for the app and a confirmation # for the submission
-I was asked for a pay stub or w-2, I wanted to send pay stub because I started making more money this year and I've attributed most of my recent approvals more due to the increased income versus my credit profile. Yes, scores finally got above 700 but Experian for some reason dropped below 700 and I've gotten most of my approvals off Experian. anyway, my pay stub only had last four of SSN(more to come) but I was afraid of Cap1 backdooring the docs against me and saying something like '2017 you didn't make $____ like you stated' so I didn't send w-2 and of course I couldn't find my SSN card. It is in my passport holder, which is normally in the same place always but I recently renewed passport at USPS and moved it ...and of course couldn't find it.
-the email came 12/3 Monday morning first thing(app was Thursday 11/30). I submitted documents Monday 11/3 afternoon. kinda kicking myself for not doing it right away but the day was busy.
-12/5 Wednesday evening I called to ask what the holdup was and to confirm that my docs were received. I was thinking maybe the docs didn't upload correctly.
- was transferred 4 times, had to explain myself every time and repeat myself at least 3 times to each person. They were total robots - "are you applying for a new card?" "are you calling about an existing account?" I didn't think, "I already applied and have been asked to verify information" was really all that difficult.
-finally got the right department. She looked up my application. She could see that I had uploaded docs. She could even see the docs. She did mention that the pay stub might represent an issue since it did not include my full SSN.
-the next day (12/6) I found my passport holder and uploaded a copy of my SSN card.
-today is 12/11 and I haven't heard anything so apparently CSR wasn't just reading company scripts.
-they told me it can take up to 3 weeks to review my documents and review application
-then if approved can take 7-10 business days to get card.
-she stated there was a huge increase in recent applications causing the delay
-so far I thought Comenity had the roughest fraud verification policy. They sent a letter that was required for the verification process. It took exactly 2 weeks to get to me. But they approved me over the phone once I called them with the code from letter and answered basic credit verification questions....but with this timeframe and lack of info I have to say that CapitalOne might be the worst in terms of customer experience while obeying fraud alert protocol requests.
-Chase was easy, they called me a few days after I applied for Freedom Unlimited. They pulled EX then TU on Sapphire Preferred and then I guess since TU didn't have the alert they just approved instantly.
-Discover had me upload ID docs in a chat right from the jump and then called me on the phone at 12am to verify ID and approve.
-AMEX texted in real time and approved me instantly
-just got passport renewed, have a trip to Rome 12/27-12/31, was hoping to get the card in November and then go to the airport to get Global Entry, use the Venture benefit but I do not think this is possible with the Cap1 procedure timelines. too bad, would have used the card for non-travel/dining spend

GL! This is becoming common, especially with a fraud alert. All for your protection.
I’d have to say that Barclays is worse. Even after sending everything, more hoops to jump. I have the card, but f’n ridiculous.

+1
With a fraud alert on your credit bureaus credit applications are often a pain, and that's somewhat by design. After all, you alerted the bureaus that either someone has already tried to use your information fraudulently, or there's a good chance it will happen.
I know it seems excessive (and the phone tree sounds especially miserable) but I have to give kudos to Capital One for allowing you to upload documents. In the not-so-distant past you would have had to go the snail-mail route, with no alternatives.
Hopefully you'll get approved and have your card before your upcoming trip, but in any case if approved you'll have the card to start the year off right.
Good luck, and keep us posted!
@blindambitionV
how was Barclay's worse? i'm interested to hear their protocols, was considering Arrival+ vs Venture
OP, did you intend for the fraud alert to stay on your account?
Curious if you plan to set a fraud alert again on all three bureaus?
Hi NRB525,
no I did not intend on keeping the fraud alert on my profiles. The agent who took my call to initially place the fraud alert told me that the alert would fall off after 90 days....or at least that's the way I remember it. I had called the police and the institutions that had received fraudulent credit applications already, the fraud alert was just to be safe. There were no other applications sent to any bureau besides my own, authentic applications so I was good with the alert falling off, especially after how long it took to get an account with Comenity
At this time I'm not sure what I will do. I am waiting on an Equifax report to see if the alert is still there. If it is there(which I believe is true) then it is there for 1 year from probably June so I'll just let it be and re-evaluate then. The Experian alert is there for a year, I had intended to ask for it to be removed but they are a bit of a hassle to deal with, and then I believe I have to send a certified letter with copies of ID to get it removed... it seems like a hassle to remove when in reality it's probably helping me in ways I might not see. I was more motivated to have it removed on principal - why tell me it's 90 days if you're going to use a different time frame?
I just don't know if I'm going to keep it on there after the year
note - since the fraud alert has been on my profiles I've been approved for cards that I've previously been denied for. Part of me wonders if the fact that the banks go through additional identity verification helps me get nudged in for an approval..... if that's the case then I'm all for keeping the remaining alerts on for either 2 years when the remaining negative remarks fall off or whenever I'm successful in having them removed.

There’s no uploading. Everything sent by snail mail. Then interrogation by Barclays. Waited for water boarding. LOL!
