Nothing really new about this. This happens with many banks. The pre-screening or pre-q are done by computers. Most of the actual applications are reviewed by humans.

Sorry to hear about the rejection.  Pre-quals are never a sure thing, though.  You always want to go into any app knowing that.

You said you got the letter saying your EX FICO was 650.  That's a pretty borderline score for an Amex approval.  What reasons were stated in the letter?

one of the reasons was

Not enough revolving accounts.

(which is 3 revolvers available all zero balances and a Mortgage and a student loan.
