I have a friend who do not have a good understanding about credit card games. I want to ask for her.
She had a cash magnet card before, but she closed it because of a sudden credit limit decrease due to inactivity in early 2020. She applied the bonus offer code she received in the mail and entered the code when she applied online, but she did not meet the spending requirement, so she did not get the bonus. But she did entered the code, so I think the american express system most likely considered she has already activated the code, but I am not sure if american express system will show that she never got that bonus. Now, she needs some extra money to buy things, and she wants to try to get some bonus offers. She has several conserns about the cash magnet bonus offer that she wants to apply.
1. Because she closed her cash magnet account recently less than a year, is that will affect her eligibility to get approved especially there are several application rules about american express. Does she has to wait in order to apply again?
2. Does she will get the bonus if she got approved based on her situation?
3. Is there a maximum bonus offer she can get from american express during 12 months period since she got the Blue Cash Preferred bonus 4 months ago?
4. She activated the bonus offer code once, but did not meet the spending requirement. If she apply again, does american express will consider that is bonus abuse or get her account closed?
5. Her credit karma is about 770, no negatives on credit. But she frequently open and close cards since she does not know the credit score game very well. I heard people say american express does not like people who open and close account frequently.
If you have any advice, I will transfer to her, and thank you very much.
Let me see if I can answer your questions.
1) AMEX put me on the naughty list for exactly a year when I canceled my BCE despite never even using the card (it's a long story). Check prequals first and if there is one, there's a good shot.
2) No she will not get the bonus because she has had the card already. AFAIA, the only bonuses she would be eligible for would be on cards she hasn't had and any offers that may come out that don't have lifetime language.
3) No limit but they may deny the card and/or bonus offer if they feel the relationship doesn't warrant it (not enough spend/swipes).
4) AMEX won't consider it abuse, they just won't honor it.
5) Credit Karma scores don't count. Have her sign up for Experian on the Experian app and they will give her the EX 8 score which is the same score AMEX uses. As for opening and closing accounts, it really depends. AMEX doesn't like THEIR accounts opened and closed within a year but I've closed a few accounts in less than a year and AMEX still approved my BCP a few months after my Cash Magnet.
My suggestions are to have your friend pull Experian FICO 8 score (715 or higher is usually pretty solid for AMEX) and have her check for prequalified offers. If there is an offer for a core revolver and not just charge cards or cobrand cards, your friend's odds are good.

You are always here to help, that is really nice of you.
It is hard to believe she lost the bonus opportunity especially she never got it during her first time, but I believe what you said. I am really thankful there are super nice people like you in this forum to help others.

Yeah it's hard to believe but it's unfortunately true. Same situation for me with the BCE I canceled. I never even activated that card and I get the no SUB pop up.
