Re: $1500 Visa Signature approval?

Here's how old I am. When I got my first credit card, the only gold and platinum cards were the Amex charge cards. And it wasn't Visa and Mastercard. It was BankAmericard and Mastercharge.

I remember back in the day,My first visa gold was from citibank in the 1980's,It was called Citibank preferred gold,You had to have at least a $5K limit and the fee was $50.00 per year,Also the platinum card from Amex was by invention only,I had the gold card(I still have the same gold card today lol) and you had to spend a certain amount to get the invite,After I met the spend I called Amex and was issued the Platinum card and told I can keep both cards(The gold fee was $75.00 and I don't remember was the fee for the platinum card was)and then in the early 90's Amex came out with the optima card,I got that one to match my gold card and my limit was $1800.00,I had the old MasterCharge issued thought a bank called Southeast Bank

That's the exact same card and details I had in the mid 90s... by the time I got mine there was no AF (they had only been waiving the fee for a year or so even on the regular version).  Having one of those actually meant something... and it was very classy looking as well.

Here's a generic pic from Google... mine was just like this:

Yes thats the card,I recall you had to make $35K per year to even be considered,I was making close to $40K at the time,My credit file dates back to 1981, It took 10 years just to get an Amex(was very very hard to get approved just for the green card)

+1

Yep, I literally got in just under the wire myself by working two jobs... that was also the same year I got an Amex Green, although I was turned down the first time.  With those two cards in my wallet, I felt as if I had really accomplished something... and back then it actually was an accomplishment.

It seems cards are easier to get now, which I guess is a good thing (?), but it's no longer a 'big deal'.  Back then I was in my early 20s, and when I would check into a hotel the "tone" of the front desk clerk would immediately change when I pulled out the Amex to check in; today they wouldn't even notice (or care).
