I'm a college student who just started building credit history 8 months ago. Since I had no credit history, I started out with Chase Freedom $500 and Discover $500. I spend $2500-4000 a month excluding rent, so I have to PIF every other week to ensure enough credit balance available. My FICO score is 712.
I recently got a very well-paid job offer for post-graduation so I requested a CLI online with Discover and updated the expected salary, but the HP only increased by CL to $1000...
Should I call them and see if they can further increase the CL or should I just apply for the new Discover Miles card? Will the CLI affect my chance of getting approved for the Discover miles card?
Also, I really want to increase my CL for my freedom card too - how long should I wait before I call Chase since I just had a HP?
Lastly, I checked Amex website and saw myself pre-qualified for BCP, PRG and Platinum - would I be better off just applying for an Amex card instead of requesting CLI?
Thank you so much!!
There are two anecdotal instances that may cause the Discover thing to not happen:
- I have heard that Student accounts can only have one Discover card. Is your card the Student version?
- I have heard that Discover WILL allow more than one Discover but sometimes they will decline if your card is too new. I want to say they want you to have each card for a year before you can get a second one.
Again, this is anecdotal and I haven't personally messed with it but you may need to call Discover and ask them what the policy is.
Since you already took the HP for the DIscover CLI, then you could probably try to ask them for reconsideration. However if you're looking to apply for a new card in hopes for a high CL then I'd go with Amex. As for Chase you can go ahead and call them right now, they aren't inquiry sensitive or anything. However keep it mind, they might give a low CLI too.
Thank you both!
I ended up applying for Amex Everyday and got my decision in just 20 seconds. Got a nice $7000 CL!
I guess I will just wait a few months before calling up Chase.
Thanks guys!

It's not just your income that matters but your credit as well. You can certainly call and see but you qualified for the 1000 CLI. If you qualified for more they would have granted more.

No way to tell. Many seem to have no luck with CLI's with Chase. Others seem to get them. We're not Chase underwriters and we don't know the details of your credit. It's not simply a matter of HP or not.

Better is always highly subjective and your question is way too vague to even offer a recommendation. How are you equating a CLI and AmEx card? AmEx offers a variety of cards and we have no way of knowing how well any of their cards suit your need/wants. You really just need to carefully assess your needs/wants and then use that to make your decision versus selecting a variety of options and trying to justify each.

Hope you did your research including comparing your top spend categories to the rewards earn rate as well as looking into how you can utilize MR redemptions to maximize point value.
Grats on your new Amex card ![]()

You would not have been approved for the Discover Miles if you had applied. Your current card has to be at least 1-year-old before Discover considers you for another card. Congrats on the AMEX though!
Awesome Amex CL, Congratulations!
Congratulations!
