I was approved today! 25k limit!
Background story, I was working with my mortgage company from April—July to work on my credit, I was only a couple points away from qualifying for a VA loan.
They had me apply for a CC, which I did at NFCU and was denied. I got a secured card instead ($500 deposit). That card was opened at the end of May. They also had me pay a couple accounts that were in collections/showing as past due from the OC (really bad divorce a few years ago). That took my middle mortgage score to 659, Bankcard score between 640/680.
Closed on the house last Friday. Applied for a NFCU platinum on a whim today. Approved for 25k. From no, to full limit in just a few months.
I even called them to make sure it was for real. It is. I’ve never ever had a CL that high.
First things first: Veteran to veteran, Thank You for your service! ![]()
Super Congrats on becoming a homeowner! You now own a piece of the Americana
you proudly defended. And to top it all off, you've got a $25,000 Navy Fed Platinum card
to go along with your new house. Very well done! ![]()
I've been a Navy Fed member since 2013. As you now know, they can
be very generous with SLs. So take good care of that new card, and chances
are high that there will be much more where that came from. ![]()
Congrats again on your new home and your new Navy Fed Platinum card.
Thanks so much for sharing! ![]()

I have an account with PenFed. How are they on approvals?
Here are some important data points on PenFed:
--- They hard pull Equifax FICO 9 for membership/loan products.
--- Their EQ hard pulls are good for up to 90 days,
but make sure you call and confirm before apping.
--- The Promise Visa is PenFed's most popular card.
myFICO members report an approving score of FICO 9 650.
--- For PenFed premium cards like the 2% Power Cash Rewards
Visa and the Platinum Rewards Visa (5x on gas, 3x on groceries),
an approval score of at least FICO 9 680 is needed.
--- For the first 6 months of membership, PenFed caps credit card limit
approvals at a $10,000 total CL. PenFed wants to limit their exposure
and give you a chance to prove yourself. But after the 6 month period,
PenFed has proved to be very generous. ![]()
Hope this helps. ![]()
Congrats on the approval!! I second Disco if you are considering the possibility of getting another card. Great card, nice perks with cashback. Good luck!
Congrats! I myself had one cc. Got approved for Disc for 10k, then NFCU platinum for 10k a few weeks later. So as others have said I would try Disc. The only reason I went Disc first was because I had read they were generous with real thin files and lower limits because they want to win your business.
I would try to get one more before the mortgage shows up depending on your income. If you get that big limit and a mortgage then the cc's might decide to wait to see how you handle it first.
