CLI after a balance transfer

So... I just did a BT to my Discover card with a 0% offer; this puts my utilization to around 40% on this acct......< 10% overall accts.   Question is should I request a CLI to buffer my utilization on this acct or just leave it alone.  How do the CCC look at CLI requests after a BT?

Re: CLI after a balance transfer

I think in this case your best bet is to call Discover (they're super friendly and helpful), and explain why you want the increase. I think pleading your case and explaining the util reasoning is a better shot than requesting it online.

Thankx........I always have to call.......the luv button for some reason doesn't work for me.  Just don't want to spook them, haven't used the card much in the past 3 mos.

Completely your call.  Can you get it down under 30% relatively quickly?

BT itself doesn't really matter.  It's just considered a payment.  All the other usual factors still apply.  You may have decreased utilization on one card but you increased it on another.  Even if the BT was a consideration, creditors aren't all identical.

Re: CLI after a balance transfer

I would bypass the automated option and make sure you actually talk to a rep. In my experience they have always been great, and helpful. You could try the online chat, but I think it's better to plead your case verbally.

They will probably work with you in some way. Just ask! Smiley Happy Good luck!

Re: CLI after a balance transfer

Congrats on the CLI.

FWIW, I think you were over-worried about Discover's view to your BT. Last May, they sent me a temporary CLI from $5k to $8k, good for one year, along with a 0% BT offer for the same 12-months. I promptly BT $7,700 into the account and started paying it down. They then sent me a "spend $1,000, get $100 back" offer (which I did the $1k in charges), AND an offer for new charges to be zero APR for several months. I'm now on the path to have it paid down to zero by May 2015 and will see what permanent CLI I can get.

So those who worry about running up their Discover cards, should not. Discover wants usage of their card.
