It's not really an insistence, it's more like what I was approved for since nobody else except another CapOne product or the Citi Double Cash card has approved me...

  • I got the CapOne Secured card first in May 2016 to reestablish my credit since I was just kinda floating by prior to that, AND I had an auto loan go 60 days late when I hit rock bottom in 2014, and I KNEW that NO unsecured card would approve a 518-529 score and no other valid credit.
  • Then as my credit got a bit better, I got a QS1 around 2017-ish; nobody else would approve me, not even my own bank or CU. However, as I got approved for the QS yesterday, as I mentioned I'm going to pay off the QS1 and close it in a couple of days since it's bucketed, so that'll only leave me with 2 CapOne cards.
  • I also tried riding the wave of better credit and applied to other cards yesterday... Amex, Citi, even Apple Card and Discover, but all of them rejected me for either too many inquires or that late auto payment that I thought was dead and irrelevant, so it looks like I'm stuck with what's going to be 3 cards for now.

It's a hard road up the credit ladder but as long as you do the basics you will continue to climb. I would just sock drawer (making sure you keep it with activity every 3 months or so just to be on the super safe side) the cap1 card you plan on closing due to it helping your AGE.

That's a strong factor in your credit rebuild.

You have a thin file now with 4 accounts (I believe at 5 you are considered a thick file).

I would really wait on apping for awhile until those inquiries age also.

I don't see if you have an installment loan which is great for your credit mix (more points). If you don't you could try a ssl with selflender or credit strong they don't do hardpulls. (coded as an installment loan but actually a savings account that reports to all 3 bureaus).

Good luck with your rebuild!

Re: Capital One Good News

Congratulations on that graduation and approval!

Capital One as mentioned is right at your door for getting in or back in with them. After that it's a turtle.
