Capital One PC or CLI? UPDATE: $100 CLI

The statement on my QS will cut tomorrow and while I like the card, getting CLIs from Capital One has been frustrating.

Opened platinum secured card almost 2 years ago, got CLI from credit steps after 5months $200 - $500. Got deposit back after 11 months and PC'd to QS. Also had a QS1 with a $500 limit from credit steps so I merged the $500 QS and $500 QS1 into a single $1k QS back in November.

I like the card, but I have limited use for it with a $1k limit. I use it until I reach about 70 - 80% of the SL and then make a substantial payment or just PIF on the due date.

I realize this is probably forever bucketed as a 'low tier' card. What are your experiences with CLIs on these cards? or even PC to Savor One or Venture One, as I already have 2% cashback on my PayPal MC and 5% category cashback on my Disco (with much higher limits).

Re: Capital One PC or CLI?

Neither. imho. All you are going to get with a PC is a new set of clothing for your bucketed card. That’s just the way Cap1 system works. When you’re profile improves they want you to app for a new card. They encourage this by not giving substantial CLI to bucketed cards even when your score/profile supports higher limits.

This card has no annual fee, so just sock draw it and app for Savor/Venture you want. Check the prequal first of course.

ive seen them give high limits on new QS cards while refusing to give increase on current QS cards because of bucketing.

*no harm in requesting a CLI too. It’s just that I don’t think you will see any change from the normal pattern of small increases for bucketed cards.

Re: Capital One PC or CLI?

Sorry I know this isn't what you asked but FINGERHUT?? (I saw the name in your card avatars!) Holy balls, I'm 41 and haven't seen that company's name since I was a little kid and didn't even know they were still around?!?!?

Oh and I suppose I should bite as I'm in the same situation as this guy.  I opened a card with Cap1 as well in 11/17 and since then I have literally gone up nearly 50pts across the board on my credit scores and have stayed there for the past few months.  They won't raise my limit either but they just give me "you dont use it enough" excuses, am I also "bucketed?" can someone explains what that actually means btw? Card was orig. plain Plat MC and they did let me PC 6 months ago to QS but won't budge on the limit.

Re: Capital One PC or CLI?

Unfortunately, Cap1 is known not to really give huge increases or PCs to “flagship” cards from bucketed cards. It’s not your fault. It’s just how they conduct business on these cards. You will find a lot of people on this forum with these QS1/QS cards that don’t grow.

I just received my credit step on my QS to 1.5K (after PC from a Plat). I’m definitely going to start pushing in December for a larger CLI after 6 months. But these QS cards are like wine, they are just to age.

Re: Capital One PC or CLI?

I've been a cardholder with Cap1 since 2008 and it's been my hardest and most frustrating card to grow. Cap1 CLIs are possible but hard to come by... If you want a fast growing card, try the Nordstrom Visa. You can request a CLI with Nordstrom every 3 months w/ a soft pull. I request CLIs often with Nordy's and they've never denied me.

Cap One QS (5/2008) $7k | Nordstrom VS (7/2017) $15k | Amex BCP (9/2018) $9.8k | Chase Freedom Flex (12/2018) $8.7k | NFCU Amex (9/2019) $31k | NFCU Flagship (12/2019) $15.2k | Discover it (10/20) $7k | Chase Sapphire Preferred (7/2021) $8k |

Re: Capital One PC or CLI?

There are a few and very few that have seen those cards get to a decent CL. But if you been here long enough. Cap1 has gotten stingy with CLI's on any of they're cards it seems. Not too many threads lately at all. Unfortunately that's the way the starter (bucket)  cards will be until you app again. I used them until I could get their top 3 and then dug the hole and buried them. RIP.

Re: Capital One PC or CLI?

Did the auto-human on the phone. Got a whopping $100 CLI! Smiley Indifferent

Now wait 6 months for another $100 lol. I'll just get a top tier CapOne when the pre-approval machine spits out VentureOne or SavorOne.
