Was denied for Costco Visa through Citi - letter only gave the reason of BK on credit report (plus, I burned Citi in the BK).
Background: I'm 4 1/2 years post Ch 7 BK due to divorce. Had a Citi card for 20 years prior and was a model customer with not a single late payment, but the BK I figured was the death knell for ever getting a new one. Since BK I've rebuilt fairly well, have a mortgage and two car payments (one loan opened 3 weeks ago!), student loans, and a bunch of credit cards I have been diligent with keeping under 30%. Credit scores hover near 700 but rarely bump over it, despite my best efforts. I figured, well, what the hell, I will try and if I get denied then I won't try again for a long while.
They pulled Equifax, which was a 686 at the time of application.
I called the executive team number, and didn't ask for a recon after she told me I was denied for reason of BK, I just said I was calling to inquire if they could give me advice as to how long I needed to be post-BK, or if it was always going to be a denial until it completely drops off. She asked me a few questions about the reasons for my BK, noted that my credit history since BK is solid, said, "Hmmmm...." then put me on hold.
5 minutes later, she came back and said, OK, I went over this with another manager, and we were able to approve you after all. $8000. I'm shocked! Boom!
