Re: Credit one credit card first ever card.

Congrats on your approval! If there are any fees associated with the card; it's probably a little too late to close it without having to pay them. Since your just starting your rebuild, I would probably hold on to it and build some history and hopefully get some additional cards once this reports positive history. Before the one year mark hits, I would close the card. Just keep the balance low for reporting purposes. Never let more than $120 report to your credit reports. Good luck with your rebuild!

Re: Credit one credit card first ever card.

Congratulations on your first card!

And because you asked for advice on Credit One:

  • You say you've already used it for gas, so now you are sort of committed to paying their annual fee/whatever other fees their card makes you pay per the agreement.  My advice is to use it sparingly over the next 11 months, pay off your balance in full every month, and close it before the one year anniversary hits (to avoid next year's anniversary fee).
  • Don't open up any more cards for the next 6 months months. Zero. Nada. Ziltch. Your objective over the next 6 months should be to make sure you establish a good credit file with Credit One, build up a little cash reserve, and do research on what should be your next card. Generally, you want to pick your next cards, you don't want them to pick you.
  • Open up one or two secured credit cards. A secured card is where you use a deposit as collaterol. There are a number of cards which are  great secured cards- you're looking for one without an annual fee, one which hopefully offers some rewards, and one where after 6 months-1 year they will make it an unsecured card and give you the money back. A lot of people will say, "But I can't afford to put up a deposit." Well, this might be an unpopular sentiment around here, but if you can't afford $200-300 for a secured card at the minimum you problably shouldn't have a credit card. Get your finances in order first and then get a credit card.

From there, you'll be off to a great start...
