I just closed on my house. I've had a crappy Capital One card with a $1,000 limit. I can't even take these guys on vacation with me. I haven't signed up for any major credit cards because my score was so low for a long time. I figured I would apply to AMEX or Discover.
I tried AMEX first and went for one of their Blue cards. I got the "application is pending" message. I got so disappointed that I went ahead and tried for Discover - got the same damn message. LOL.
A few days later, I figured I would check both applications and boy did I get a surprise! I got approved for both!
AMEX Blue - $5,000 - 18% APR. No interest for 14 months.
Discover IT - $10,000 - 15% APR. No interest for 14 months.
I can actually go on vacation and not have to worry about holds on debit cards now! Yay!
My scores after the apping:
EX - 676. EQ - 676. TU - 693.
I never thought I would live to see the day that I'd be permitted to carry either of these guys in my wallet. This sounds silly, but I feel blessed that I fixed my past stupid mistakes and clawed my way back out to finally have better companies back me up. I'm so grateful to this community for everything I've learned and the support to get to this point.
I'm shocked I got such nice limits (even if it weren't their best offers). I do make about 105K a year and I bought a house for a respectable $120,000. Didn't want to live beyond my means and I can still save great after seeing utility bills so far!
Thanks to all!
I should also add a few other stats:
1. 4 old CO's paid off. They're four years old at least.
2. I had a bunch of 60 day lates on an old car loan about 4 years ago as well. I should have never bought the car - I was making crap at the time and I was dumb enough to get approved for an overpriced SUV and drove too far to my old job where I didn't make as good money as I do now. I now drive a smaller car that's perfect for me, my wife, and little girl!
I guess time does heal to an extent. I learned so many lessons. Any questions, let me know!
Happy for you!
Congrats! Thanks for sharing.

What was your credit utilization when you applied? AAoA? Inquiries?

Sorry I should have provided that the first time around.
Utilization - 1% (had one card with a $73 balance)
AAOA - 7 years
Inquiries - 2
AMEX did a HP on EX. Discover did their HP on TU. Hope this helps!
Awesome thanks I'm in the same boat as you kind of, I have one charge off from 2008 that is paid now, one judgement that is paid from 2007. I plan to apply to both those cards too once I lower my credit utilization to under 10%!
Congrats btw, both cards are awesome!
